Ecosystem functioning and ecological status in the Venice lagoon, which relationships?

M. Anelli Monti et al.

Summary: Implementing management measures to improve ecological status in coastal and transitional water environments is a major challenge within an Ecosystem Based Management approach. The complex relationship between ecosystem functioning and ecological status requires the use of ecological modeling to support BQEs monitoring.

Evaluation on the relevance of regional urbanization and ecological security in the nine provinces along the Yellow River, China

Meng Qiu et al.

Summary: The analysis and discussion of the interactive relationship between urbanization and ecological security are crucial for ensuring their coordinated development. The study found that the urbanization level and ecological security level in the nine provinces along the Yellow River have been increasing, but with a slower rate of increase over time. The correlation between urbanization level and the ecological security system is strong, with population urbanization having the greatest impact on ecological security and ecological governance having the strongest restraint on urbanization development. There is a strong decoupling effect between urbanization and ecological security in these provinces, with future ecological security expected to have a greater impact on urbanization development.

Integrating conservation targets and ecosystem services in landscape spatial planning from Portugal

Ana Sofia Vaz et al.

Summary: Securing biodiversity values alongside ecosystem services is a priority in European policy and territorial planning. The study in central Portugal identified priority conservation areas through spatial prioritization of biodiversity and literature review on ecosystem services, involving political stakeholders and expert-based field validation. Nine priority areas were selected for landscape planning and management, considering their high biodiversity values and potential for ecosystem services' supply, reflecting the goals of the EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030.

Diversity, community composition, and bioactivity of cultivable fungal endophytes in saline and dry soils in deserts

Mahdieh S. Hosseyni Moghaddam et al.

Summary: Soil pH and electric conductivity were found to determine the fungal endophyte communities in plants in dry and saline soils in the desert. Host species was identified as the main factor shaping the endophyte composition, with soil type additionally affecting endophytes of both above- and below-ground organs. Our study suggests the potential use of these endophytes in crop production under salinity/drought stress and as biocontrol agents.

Towards the evaluation of regional ecosystem integrity using NDVI, brightness temperature and surface heterogeneity

Jakub Zeleny et al.

Summary: Maintaining ecological integrity is a global strategic goal, yet there is no consensus on a widely usable methodology to assess it. This study proposes a comprehensive approach to quantify regional ecosystem integrity based on FAIR data obtained through satellite remote sensing. The approach focuses on three central variables and introduces a Regional Index of Ecological Integrity to represent the integrity of study areas. Results show agriculture as a significant factor reducing regional integrity and conservation areas ranking highest in integrity.

The soil moisture data bank: The ground-based, model-based, and satellite-based soil moisture data

Ameneh Tavakol et al.

Summary: Soil moisture plays a critical role in the climate system, linking atmospheric and terrestrial energy, water, and carbon cycles. Understanding soil moisture variations is crucial for predicting floods, droughts, and heatwaves, as well as improving weather forecasting. Ground-based data are limited by spatial and temporal coverage, leading to the importance of model- and satellite-based measurements as alternatives.
