The Frontal and Cerebellar Metabolism Related to Cognitive Dysfunction in Multiple System Atrophy

Cong Shen et al.

Summary: This study aimed to explore the possible cerebral metabolism associated with domain-specific cognitive performances in multiple system atrophy (MSA). The results showed that metabolic changes in the frontal lobe and cerebellum may participate in the cognitive impairments of patients with MSA, but more research is needed to understand the cognitive and corresponding metabolic differences between the two subtypes of MSA.

Dysautonomia in Parkinson's Disease: Impact of Glucocerebrosidase Gene Mutations on Cardiovascular Autonomic Control

Angelica Carandina et al.

Summary: Evidence from clinical practice suggests that PD patients with GBA mutations have more severe dysautonomic symptoms. These patients show increased sympathetic activity at rest and reduced heart rate response during active standing compared to iPD patients. Furthermore, cardiovascular autonomic dysfunction in PD patients is associated with longer disease duration, REM sleep behavior disorder, and constipation.

The Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA): updated norms and psychometric insights into adaptive testing from healthy individuals in Northern Italy

Edoardo Nicolo Aiello et al.

Summary: This study aimed to update region-specific norms for the Italian MoCA and provide information on sensitivity and discriminative capability at the item level. Age and education significantly predicted all MoCA measures, while substantial disagreements with previous norms classifications were detected. Certain items in the MoCA were found to lack sensitivity, particularly in the orientation and memory tasks.

A study on the characteristics of cognitive function in patients with multiple system atrophy in China

Nannan Li et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the cognitive function of MSA patients in China using a case-control study design and found that cognitive impairment is common among MSA patients, with distinct characteristics. Cognitive impairments in MSA patients were prominent in visuospatial/executive functions, attention, language, and orientation, with differences between MSA-P and MSA-C patients. Additionally, cognitive function was negatively correlated with the severity of MSA.

Relationship Between Orthostatic Hypotension and Cognitive Functions in Multiple System Atrophy: A Longitudinal Study

Sofia Cuoco et al.

Summary: The study revealed that patients with OH had better performance on certain tasks initially, but experienced cognitive decline over time compared to patients without OH. A significant predictive factor for global cognitive status worsening at follow-up was the presence of OH, along with age, education, and MOCA score.

Interrelationships between Survival, Sex, and Blood Pressure in Patients with Multiple System Atrophy

Tanya Gurevich et al.

Summary: The study aimed to estimate survival among MSA patients in relation to blood pressure measurements, by sex. The findings suggest a sex-based difference in the effect of blood pressure on death risk among MSA patients, indicating the importance of adjusting the therapeutic approach accordingly.
