Hyperbaric oxygen and radiation therapy: a review

E. Fernandez et al.

Summary: Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) has been used for decades as a treatment for radiation injuries, with evidence showing that at pressures exceeding 2 absolute atmospheres (ata), HBOT can reduce late-onset radiation injuries to various areas. HBOT also appears to prevent osteoradionecrosis and enhance the effectiveness of radiation in certain types of tumors. Promising results have been achieved in the local control of high-grade gliomas with HBOT at 2 ata.

The Role of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy in Pneumatosis Cystoides Intestinalis-A Scoping Review

Diogo Alpuim Costa et al.

Summary: Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis (PCI) is a rare condition characterized by gas-filled cysts in the gastrointestinal tract wall, with varying degrees of severity and potential complications. Treatment options range from conservative approaches to surgery, with hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) showing promising results in selected cases. Further research is needed to fully understand the pathophysiology and optimal management strategies for PCI.

Bioresorbable, electrospun nonwoven for delayed and prolonged release of temozolomide and nimorazole

Monika Musial-Kulik et al.

Summary: The study utilized electrospinning technology to prepare bioresorbable nonwoven mats for controlled release of drugs to combat glioblastoma, achieving delayed and controlled drug release. The results demonstrated the effectiveness of this method for the release of nimorazole and temozolomide, laying the foundation for further development of treatment methods.

Summary: Oxygen deficiency activates the signaling pathway of HIF, playing a key role in the development of various diseases, including cancer. The activation of HIF during tumor progression influences angiogenesis, cell metabolism, invasiveness, and metastasis, potentially leading to different types of tumors.

Tumor Vessels Fuel the Fire in Glioblastoma

Sara Rosinska et al.

Summary: Glioblastoma tumors use various methods to increase blood vessel supply to the tumor mass, but the neo-generated vascular networks are morphologically and functionally abnormal, indicating inefficiency in the vascularization processes. In the perspective of anti-cancer therapies, it is crucial to understand how these neovascularization modalities can be mechanistically hindered.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy as a complementary treatment for radiation proctitis: Useless or useful? - A literature review

Diogo Alpuim Costa et al.

Summary: Radiotherapy is a common treatment for cancer, but it may lead to late complications such as radiation proctitis (RP). Management of RP is challenging and may include hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT), although the effectiveness of HBOT remains uncertain. More prospective and randomized studies are needed to determine the true impact of HBOT on RP treatment.

Hyperbaric oxygen suppressed tumor progression through the improvement of tumor hypoxia and induction of tumor apoptosis in A549-cell-transferred lung cancer

Shao-Yuan Chen et al.

Summary: The study found that HBOT can improve tumor hypoxia, suppress lung cancer growth, and increase apoptosis of lung cancer cells by modifying the tumor hypoxic microenvironment. Therefore, HBOT may serve as an adjuvant therapy for solid tumors such as lung cancer.
