Spectrum of neurological complications following COVID-19 vaccination

Ravindra Kumar Garg et al.

Summary: COVID-19 vaccines have brought hope against the pandemic, with some minor and transient neurological complications reported post-vaccination. The most devastating complication is cerebral venous sinus thrombosis, while Bell's palsy is another major concern. Additional unexpected adverse events include acute transverse myelitis, acute disseminated encephalomyelitis, and acute demyelinating polyneuropathy, as well as reactivation of herpes zoster. Studies are needed to explore the causal association between vaccines and these neurological events.

Protection against SARS-CoV-2 after Covid-19 Vaccination and Previous Infection

Victoria Hall et al.

Summary: This study investigated the duration and effectiveness of immunity among healthcare workers in the United Kingdom. It found that two doses of the BNT162b2 vaccine provided high short-term protection against SARS-CoV-2 infection, but this protection significantly decreased after six months. However, infection-acquired immunity boosted by vaccination remained high, even more than one year after infection.

Corticosteroid Use in Otolaryngology: Current Considerations During the COVID-19 Era

C. W. David Chang et al.

Summary: Systemic corticosteroids are beneficial for sudden sensorineural hearing loss and Bell's palsy, reducing long-term morbidity and acute laryngotracheal edema. Local or topical corticosteroids are preferred for most other otolaryngologic indications. Whether systemic corticosteroids affect response to COVID-19 vaccination is unknown, and immunosuppressed patients should adhere to recommended infection control practices. COVID-19 vaccination with approved vaccines is safe for immunocompromised patients.

Summary: Recent significant scientific investment has led to an expanding range of COVID-19 vaccines and increasing global uptake. However, concerns around potential risks and adverse events, such as vaccine-induced thrombosis and thrombocytopenia, pose challenges in interpreting data, communicating risks, and establishing causality. The 'infodemic' facilitated by the Internet and media further complicates understanding and communicating these risks to clinicians and the general population.

Autoimmune Vestibulopathy-A Case Series

Surangi Mendis et al.

Summary: Autoimmune inner ear disease (AIED) is a rare clinical entity with unclear pathogenicity, heterogeneous clinical presentation in the context of secondary systemic autoimmune disease, and optimal treatment avenues. Vestibular impairment in AIED is rarely studied in detail due to the focus on auditory symptoms and their responsiveness to immunosuppression in the proposed diagnostic criteria. This article presents three cases of vestibulopathy in the context of autoimmune inner ear conditions, including the first reported case of autoimmune inner ear pathology associated with the administration of the Pfizer-BioNTech SARS-CoV2 vaccination.

Reactivation of herpes simplex keratitis following vaccination for COVID-19

James Richardson-May et al.

Summary: An 82-year-old man with a history of herpes simplex keratitis experienced recurrence 1 day after receiving the novel COVID-19 vaccine. Despite worsened condition, treatment with systemic aciclovir, prednisolone, moxifloxacin, atropine, and oral doxycycline led to clinical improvement and improved visual acuity. While the benefits of vaccination are important, ophthalmic providers should be aware of the rare potential for reactivation of herpetic eye disease following vaccination for prompt diagnosis and treatment.

Summary: This article emphasizes the association between COVID-19 and the development of multiple types of autoantibodies and autoimmune diseases in patients. Systematic Review and Meta-analysis: Effectiveness of Corticosteroids in Treating Adults With Acute Vestibular Neuritis

Kai-Jing Leong et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the efficacy of corticosteroids in treating acute vestibular neuritis in adults. Eight studies were reviewed, with six included in the meta-analysis. The results showed no significant differences in complete recovery rates between corticosteroid and placebo groups at 1, 6, and 12 months. While there was better caloric recovery in the corticosteroid group at 1 month, overall effects did not differ across 12 months. Subjective recovery also did not vary between groups. Five studies reported adverse effects from corticosteroids, leading to the conclusion that there is insufficient evidence to support their use in managing acute vestibular neuritis.
