Regulatory T cells: Their role in triple-negative breast cancer progression and metastasis

Rama Rao Malla et al.

Summary: Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is an aggressive and immunogenic subtype of breast cancer. T-regulatory cell (Treg) infiltration and other mechanisms contribute to drug resistance and early recurrence. Understanding the role of tumor-infiltrating Tregs in tumor progression and metabolic reprogramming is crucial for developing immune-based therapeutics.

Copper in tumors and the use of copper-based compounds in cancer treatment

Daniela Almeida da Silva et al.

Summary: Copper ions have shown potential in cancer therapy, especially when complexed with organic counterparts. Studies have also suggested using copper in nanoparticles for imaging and treating hypoxic tumors, but challenges remain in their solubility and mechanism of action.

Copper-induced tumor cell death mechanisms and antitumor theragnostic applications of copper complexes

Yicheng Jiang et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown that imbalanced copper homeostasis can affect tumor growth, causing irreversible damage. Copper can induce various forms of cell death, such as apoptosis and autophagy, through mechanisms involving reactive oxygen species accumulation, proteasome inhibition, and antiangiogenesis. This review highlights the antitumor mechanisms of copper, the development of biomaterials and nanotechnology incorporating copper, and the clinical applications of novel copper complexes.

Treatment landscape of triple-negative breast cancer - expanded options, evolving needs

Giampaolo Bianchini et al.

Summary: Recent advances in omics technologies have improved our understanding of the heterogeneity and microenvironment of triple-negative breast cancers (TNBCs), supporting a view of this breast cancer subtype as an ecosystem that encompasses both intrinsic and extrinsic features of cancer cells. The authors of this Review describe the current and upcoming therapeutic landscape of TNBC and discuss how an integrated view of the TNBC ecosystem can provide improved opportunities for tailoring treatment.

Tumor-B-cell interactions promote isotype switching to an immunosuppressive IgG4 antibody response through upregulation of IL-10 in triple negative breast cancers

Nicole J. Toney et al.

Summary: Interactions between tumor-infiltrating B cells (TIB) and triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) drive chronic inflammation and isotype switching to IgG4, which is associated with poor prognosis. IL-10 plays a crucial role in this process and may contribute to immune escape in TNBC.

Copper induces cell death by targeting lipoylated TCA cycle proteins

Peter Tsvetkov et al.

Summary: Copper is an essential cofactor for all organisms, but excessive copper can lead to cell death. We found that copper-dependent cell death mechanism is different from known mechanisms, and it is related to mitochondrial respiration. Copper directly binds to lipoylated components of the tricarboxylic acid cycle, causing protein aggregation and loss of iron-sulfur cluster proteins, ultimately leading to cell death.

Immune checkpoint blockade in triple negative breast cancer influenced by B cells through myeloid-derived suppressor cells

Alyssa Vito et al.

Summary: The combination immunotherapy platform in triple negative breast cancer increases tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes and improves response to immune checkpoint blockade. B cells play a crucial role in antitumor immunity and modulate myeloid-derived suppressor cells.

Serum Copper Level and the Copper-to-Zinc Ratio Could Be Useful in the Prediction of Lung Cancer and Its Prognosis: A Case-Control Study in Northeast China

Wenjun Wang et al.

Summary: The study revealed that increased serum copper and zinc levels, as well as the Cu:Zn ratio, are positively associated with lung cancer risk. Serum copper levels and the Cu:Zn ratio can serve as effective predictive indicators for lung cancer and also aid in evaluating the prognosis of patients with non-small-cell lung cancer.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

Prognostic value of tumor-infiltrating B lymphocytes and plasma cells in triple-negative breast cancer

Hajime Kuroda et al.

Summary: The study showed that a high density of sCD20 + TILs was significantly associated with favorable prognosis in both RFS and OS, while increased sCD38 + TILs in TNBC correlated with a significantly favorable prognosis in RFS. On the other hand, iCD38, iCD138, and sCD138 were not significantly correlated with RFS or OS in TNBC patients.

Establishment and Validation of Prognostic Nomograms Based on Serum Copper Level for Patients With Early-Stage Triple-Negative Breast Cancer

Fangfang Duan et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between serum copper levels and early-stage triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), and establish a predictive model based on serum copper levels for individualized survival predictions. The results showed that high serum copper levels were significantly associated with worse DFS and OS, and the prognostic models based on serum copper demonstrated excellent discrimination and predictive calibration.
