Detection of newly introduced Y280-lineage H9N2 avian influenza viruses in live bird markets in Korea

Sungsu Youk et al.

Summary: This study reports the first detection of Y280-lineage H9N2 avian influenza viruses in live bird markets in Korea, indicating the dispersal of newly introduced viruses from China. Genetic analysis showed high homology between these viruses and one of the most prevalent H9N2 genotypes in China, suggesting potential implications for public health due to the increasing human cases of the same genotype H9N2 infection in China.

The Immune Regulatory Effect of Boron on Ostrich Chick Splenic Lymphocytes

Xiaoting Zhang et al.

Summary: The study revealed that boron concentration significantly affects the proliferation, apoptosis, cytokine secretion, and gene expression of splenic lymphocytes in ostrich chicks. Low boron concentrations can promote cell function and cytokine secretion, while high concentrations of boron have opposite effects on cells. The necroptosis pathway may play a pivotal role in regulating the immune response of boron-treated splenic lymphocytes in ostrich chicks.

Vaccination with inactivated virus against low pathogenic avian influenza subtype H9N2 does not prevent virus transmission in chickens

Hongrui Cui et al.

Summary: The widely used H9N2 vaccine in China has been found to be ineffective in controlling the transmission of low pathogenic avian influenza virus, possibly due to insufficient immune response triggered by vaccination or the occurrence of escape mutants selected by vaccine-induced immune pressure. New mitigation strategies are needed to address the transmission and immune escape of LPAI viruses in poultry populations.

Genetic Evolution Characteristics of Genotype G57 Virus, A Dominant Genotype of H9N2 Avian Influenza Virus

Jinfeng Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the genetic evolution of H9N2 avian influenza virus in China, showing that the G57 genotype became dominant after 2013 with better adaptability and stronger nucleotide substitution rates and positive selection pressures. The study emphasizes the importance of urgent attention and diligent surveillance of H9N2 avian influenza virus given the relatively constant genotype frequency and ongoing adaptive evolution observed.

N. G. Zinyakov et al.

Summary: This paper presents genetic data on the full genome analysis of a H9N2 influenza virus isolated from chicken pathological material in Tajikistan in 2018, which belongs to the Y280 genetic group of low-virulent A/H9 influenza virus and is closely related to an A/H9 influenza virus isolated in the Far East of Russia in 2018. Genetic similarity was also found to H7N9 subtype viruses from Inner Mongolia and Hebei regions of China in 2017.

A Cross-Reactive Monoclonal Antibody Against Neuraminidases of Both H9N2 and H3N2 Influenza Viruses Shows Protection in Mice Challenging Models

Fei Wang et al.

Summary: The study found that the monoclonal antibody 1G8 can cross-react with and inhibit the NA of H3N2 human seasonal influenza virus. It also provides protection against H1N2 viruses carrying H9N2 NA or H3N2 NA. Additionally, residue 199 is crucial for H3N2 HSIV to escape from mAb 1G8.

Influenza Neuraminidase Characteristics and Potential as a Vaccine Target

Sarah Creytens et al.

Summary: Neuraminidase of influenza viruses is crucial in the virus life cycle and a key target of the host immune system. Recent research has focused on utilizing neuraminidase to enhance the protective potential of influenza vaccines. Understanding the antigenicity and immune responses of neuraminidase can provide valuable insights for vaccine design and flu control strategies.

Balancing the influenza neuraminidase and hemagglutinin responses by exchanging the vaccine virus backbone

Jin Gao et al.

Summary: Virions are commonly used as antigen source for viral vaccines, with the antigen abundance determined by the content of each protein in the virus. By exchanging viral backbone internal genes, the NA to HA ratio in virions can be improved to produce vaccines with higher NA content that can elicit more balanced neutralizing antibody responses to NA and HA. This approach could help improve the suboptimal efficacy of current influenza vaccines and provide broader coverage against circulating strains.

The effect of calcium and magnesium on activity, immunogenicity, and efficacy of a recombinant N1/N2 neuraminidase vaccine

Luca T. Giurgea et al.

Summary: The study found that the stability and activity of recombinant N1/N2 NA vaccine (NAV) did not directly correlate with immunogenicity and efficacy, as reassessed through immunization and viral challenge in mice. Mice vaccinated with NAV showed strong antibody responses against N1 and N2 and reduced viral titers and antiviral/inflammatory responses after influenza A (H1N1) virus challenge, underscoring the importance of NA in influenza vaccination strategies.

Universal Influenza Virus Neuraminidase Vaccine Elicits Protective Immune Responses against Human Seasonal and Pre-pandemic Strains

Amanda L. Skarlupka et al.

Summary: The N1-I COBRA NA vaccine antigen showed cross-reactivity with various influenza viruses, providing protection and lower lung viral titers in mice challenged with different viral strains. This research suggests that the NA antigen has the potential to enhance the breadth of protection in a universal influenza vaccine formulation.

Assessing the effects of a two-amino acid flexibility in the Hemagglutinin 220-loop receptor-binding domain on the fitness of Influenza A(H9N2) viruses

Yixue Sun et al.

Summary: This study focused on the h9.4.2.5 sublineage of H9N2 avian influenza viruses, revealing the essential roles of residues 226 and 227 in receptor avidity and immune evasion. The flexibility at these two residues was shown to modulate receptor avidity and potentially contribute to the emergence of immune evasion mutants in H9N2 viruses. Residues 226 and 227 are under selective pressure and their synergistic regulation of receptor avidity and antigenicity may play a significant role in the evolution of circulating H9N2 viruses.
