Intestinal Mucosal Immunity-Mediated Modulation of the Gut Microbiome by Oral Delivery of Enterococcus faecium Against Salmonella Enteritidis Pathogenesis in a Laying Hen Model

Shimeng Huang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of E. faecium on laying performance, egg quality, host metabolism, intestinal mucosal immunity, and gut microbiota of laying hens challenged with S. Enteritidis. The results showed that E. faecium supplementation improved egg production and shell thickness, regulated host lipid metabolism, enhanced immune functions, alleviated intestinal injuries, and improved gut microbial dysbiosis caused by S. Enteritidis infection.

Vitamin D3 Nutritional Status Affects Gut Health of Salmonella-Challenged Laying Hens

Fangshen Guo et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact and possible mechanisms of vitamin D3 (VD3) nutritional status on the gut health of hens challenged with Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis (SE). The results showed that VD3 sufficiency reversed the negative effects of salmonella infection and VD3 deficiency on laying performance of hens, ameliorated gut injury, and restored the balance of gut microbiota.

Selenium-enriched Bifidobacterium longum DD98 attenuates irinotecan-induced intestinal and hepatic toxicity in vitro and in vivo

Hui Zhu et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the preventive effects of Se-enriched Bifidobacterium longum DD98 on CPT-11-induced intestinal and hepatic toxicities, both in vitro and in vivo. Results indicate that Se-B. longum DD98 can protect against CPT-11-induced damages by regulating cell viability, oxidative stress, pro-inflammatory cytokines, tight-junction proteins, and gut microbiota composition. It shows potential as a promising adjuvant therapeutic agent in combination with CPT-11 for cancer treatment.

Vitamin K alleviates bone calcium loss caused by Salmonella Enteritidis through carboxylation of osteocalcin

Yaojun Liu et al.

Summary: The study found that supplementing laying hens' diets with 2mg/kg of vitamin K (VK) can enhance bone strength under Salmonella Enteritidis challenge. The medullary area has been proven to be a sensitive biomarker for bone calcium loss caused by SE infection. There is an interaction between SE challenge and VK levels regarding tibia strength and serum Ca levels.

Dietary glycyl-glutamine supplementation ameliorates intestinal integrity, inflammatory response, and oxidative status in association with the gut microbiota in LPS-challenged piglets†

Baoyang Xu et al.

Summary: The study showed that dietary GlyGln supplementation improved the inflammation response induced by LPS and protected the morphology of the ileum. Furthermore, GlyGln enriched the gut microbiota by restoring diversity, promoting obligate anaerobes, and increasing levels of SCFA-producing bacteria, leading to improved gut health and function.
