Transdisciplinarity: Synthesis towards a modular approach

Ortwin Renn

Summary: The article discusses the importance of establishing new concepts and methods in scientific research, proposing a modular concept that integrates various knowledge generating methods to address deficits in existing concepts and provide guidance for future research and policy design.

A new model of pollination services potential using a landscape approach: A case study of post-mining area in Poland

Damian Lowicki et al.

Summary: Pollination is a crucial ecosystem service strongly connected to biodiversity, which should be considered in spatial planning and land reclamation. By incorporating a landscape approach, this study proposed a new model for assessing potential pollination services.

Challenges and opportunities for the Ecosystem Services approach: Evaluating experiences of implementation in Sweden

Erik Hysing

Summary: Research indicates that the Ecosystem Services (ES) approach provides important opportunities for horizontal integration, professional communication, and networking, but further implementation has been hindered by a lack of coordination, public participation, and institutionalization.

The link between a high-mountain community and ecosystem services of juniper forests in Fann Mountains (Tajikistan)

Oimahmad Rahmonov et al.

Summary: This study aims to investigate the relationship between mountain communities in the Fann Mountains and the use of ecosystem services, with a particular focus on the importance of juniper forests as key species. The results highlight the significance of juniper in providing valuable services to indigenous communities, emphasizing the need for the protection and restoration of juniper forests in the area.

Modeling the on-site and off-site benefits of Atlantic forest conservation in a Brazilian watershed

Sandra I. Saad et al.

Summary: By studying a PES project in Brazil, it was found that increasing forest cover and implementing soil conservation practices can reduce soil loss and sediment export. These measures improve regulating services and provide benefits both onsite and to downstream reservoirs.

Integrating ecosystem services into policymaking-A case study on the use of boundary organizations

Erica Honeck et al.

Summary: Boundary organizations are non-traditional structures that can facilitate interdisciplinary relationships and serve as a conduit between academic research and public agencies. Through a case study of GE-21 in Geneva, Switzerland, it was found that such organizations have several characteristics that can facilitate the implementation of scientific evidence into policy, such as proposing timely solutions to policy needs and providing a safe space for idea exchange and relationship development.

Integrating Bayesian Networks into ecosystem services assessment to support water management at the river basin scale

Hung Vuong Pham et al.

Summary: This study used Bayesian Networks to analyze ecosystem services potential in the Taro River basin in Italy, finding trade-offs between water yield and nutrient retention services due to changes in precipitation and land use patterns. The results underscore the need for win-win spatial planning and water management strategies to enhance freshwater ecosystem services potential.

A multi-criteria analytical method to assess ecosystem services at urban site level, exemplified by two German city districts

P. Brzoska et al.

Summary: This study presents a method to assess the capacity of ecosystems to deliver urban ES, exemplified for two German city districts, showing areas deficient in ES that can be used for prioritization of development measures.

Australian Indigenous insights into ecosystem services: Beyond services towards connectedness - People, place and time

Natalie Stoeckl et al.

Summary: The focus of the Aboriginal model is primarily on the connections between and within human and natural systems, with longer temporal dimensions, emphasis on feelings and spirituality, and recognition of stewardship activities improving both the environment and wellbeing. The 'right way' of looking after Country involves not only accounting for generated ES values or undertaken stewardship activities, but also recording how it is done and by whom.

Using social media to assess recreation across urban green spaces in times of abrupt change

Tomasz Grzyb et al.

Summary: Urban green spaces (UGS) offer convenient contact with nature for most of the world's population, providing various recreational ecosystem services (RES) to visitors. The study explores how different types of UGS deliver RES and how access changes impact use patterns, using Instagram data from the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in Warsaw, Poland. The findings show that the intensity and pattern of recreational use in UGS are highly influenced by the characteristics of green spaces and abrupt changes in access, as demonstrated during the recent outbreak.

The value of doing nothing - How informal green spaces can provide comparable ecosystem services to cultivated urban parks

Piotr Sikorski et al.

Summary: The study found that informal green spaces (IGS) are comparable to urban parks in providing ecosystem services (ES) and preserving biodiversity, and in some aspects even outperform parks. The differences were mainly due to the canopy development stage rather than cultivation methods. Despite the lack of infrastructure, IGS with dense vegetation were perceived more positively than traditionally cultivated parks.
