Discovery of calcium-binding peptides derived from defatted lemon basil seeds with enhanced calcium uptake in human intestinal epithelial cells, Caco-2

Norhameemee Kheeree et al.

Summary: This research discovered that defatted lemon basil seeds treated with Alcalase produced calcium-chelating peptides that can enhance calcium absorption. The purified peptides, Basil-1 and Basil-2, showed significant activities for calcium binding. The study also revealed the mechanism of chelation between calcium and the peptides, and suggested that the peptides could promote calcium absorption through both active and passive transport pathways.

Advantages of Heterotrophic Microalgae as a Host for Phytochemicals Production

Surumpa Jareonsin et al.

Summary: Currently, most commercial recombinant technologies rely on host systems, each with its own benefits and drawbacks depending on the target products. Prokaryote hosts lack key mechanisms for producing eukaryotic products like phytochemicals, while other eukaryote hosts have limitations such as low yield and high cost. Using heterotrophic microalgae as a host system may offer a solution to these challenges and could be a promising direction for high-value phytochemicals production in the future.
