A Versatile, Incubator-Compatible, Monolithic GaN Photonic Chipscope for Label-Free Monitoring of Live Cell Activities

Yong Hou et al.

Summary: A new method called GaN chipscope is proposed to quantitatively monitor the progression of various intracellular processes in a label-free manner. This method uses a cost-effective, ultrasensitive, and ultracompact GaN photonic chip for photoelectric readout and cellular imaging. The miniaturized chipscope is designed compactly for real-time observation of cell activities. This method shows great potential in both fundamental cell biology studies and clinical applications.

Ionic strength controls long-term cell-surface interactions - A QCM-D study of S. cerevisiae adhesion, retention and detachment

Derick Yongabi et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of ionic strength on the long-term adhesion, retention, and detachment of yeast cells on gold and silica surfaces. The findings indicate that both short and long-term cell adhesion levels increase with higher ionic strength, while cells in higher ionic strength mediums experience longer retention and detachment times. The positive correlation between cell zeta potential and ionic strength suggests a role of zeta potential in cell retention and detachment.

Flexibility and Adaptation of Cancer Cells in a Heterogenous Metabolic Microenvironment

Gabriele Grasmann et al.

Summary: Cancer cells exhibit high metabolic flexibility and adapt to variations in nutrient availability. Studies have shown that the metabolic tumor microenvironment typically contains a lower concentration of glucose compared to normal tissues. Additionally, the review focuses on adaptive responses in cancer cells to nutrient deprivation and the utilization of alternative nutrients in anabolic metabolic pathways.

Intercellular communication induces glycolytic synchronization waves between individually oscillating cells

Martin Mojica-Benavides et al.

Summary: This study utilized a diffusion-limited microfluidic system to mimic the structure of a multicellular organ, demonstrating that a group of oscillating yeast cells can form subpopulations of spatially differentiated and temporally synchronized cells under certain conditions. The intricate interplay of intracellular biochemical reaction networks and intercellular communication, along with the fluid dynamics of the reaction chamber, plays a critical role in generating the synchronized cell populations. The results of the study, which were experimentally tested and reproducible, suggest that the observed spontaneous community development resembles zoned cell differentiation in multicellular organs.

Chemokine-biased robust self-organizing polarization of migrating cells in vivo

Adan Olguin-Olguin et al.

Summary: In studying the mechanisms controlling front-rear polarity in migrating cells using zebrafish primordial germ cells as an in vivo model, it was found that the accumulation and flow of actin plays a key role. Following cell division, the accumulation of Ezrin at the cleavage plane is the first sign for cell polarity. The antagonistic interactions between the cell front and back determine the polarization of the cell.

Thermal Reversal Surface with Sticky Tentacle for Modulating Initial Cell Adhesion and Detachment

Na Li et al.

Summary: The introduction of choline phosphate modification on thermal responsive surfaces enhances initial cell adhesion, allowing for regulation of attachment speed and acceleration of cell spreading and proliferation. The immobilized molecules on the surface facilitate fast cell adhesion release by thermal contraction of the polymer, providing a promising universal model for modulating cell attachment and detachment in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine.

Techniques for the Detection of Sickle Cell Disease: A Review

Wjdan A. Arishi et al.

Summary: Sickle cell disease is caused by a mutation in the beta-globin gene, leading to abnormal hemoglobin production. Early detection is crucial for reducing mortality. Various techniques, including complete blood count, sickling test, and genetic tests, are available for detecting the disease.

Thermodynamic Optimality of Glycolytic Oscillations

Pureun Kim et al.

Summary: Temporal order in living matters reflects the self-organizing nature of dynamical processes driven out of thermodynamic equilibrium. The precision of biochemical oscillations is constrained by the thermodynamic cost according to the thermodynamic uncertainty relation (TUR). Glycolytic oscillations under cellular conditions are found to be cost-effective, with minimal entropy production when the oscillation period is between 5-10 minutes.

Circulating trophoblast cell clusters for early detection of placenta accreta spectrum disorders

Yalda Afshar et al.

Summary: A newly developed microchip technology enables efficient enrichment of circulating trophoblasts from maternal blood for early detection of placenta accreta spectrum (PAS). The researchers identified a high prevalence of circulating trophoblast clusters in PAS patients and constructed a diagnostic model with excellent performance in distinguishing PAS. The combined trophoblast assay shows potential to improve current diagnostic methods for the early detection of PAS.
