Achieving Efficient p-Type Organic Thermoelectrics by Modulation of Acceptor Unit in Photovoltaic π-Conjugated Copolymers

Junhui Tang et al.

Summary: In this study, a series of D-A semiconducting copolymers with various electron-deficient A-units were systematically investigated for efficient OTEs. The relationship between thermoelectric characteristics and the electron-withdrawing ability of A-unit was elucidated through p-type doping, highlighting the importance of the strong D-A nature and highly electron-deficient A-unit in enhancing Seebeck coefficient while impacting doping efficiency and electrical conductivity. Ultimately, a high peak power factor and outstanding Seebeck coefficient were achieved in a paradigm OPV donor, demonstrating great potential in wearable electronics driven by a small temperature gradient.

Recent advances in n-type organic thermoelectric materials, dopants, and doping strategies

Ayushi Tripathi et al.

Summary: Organic thermoelectric materials have been extensively studied for their potential applications in flexible and wearable TE generators. However, research on efficient n-type TE materials and their properties is less abundant compared to p-type TE materials. Recent advances have been made in the development of n-type organic TE materials, n-dopants, and doping techniques, resulting in the discovery of n-type structures with comparable TE performance to p-type structures.

Degenerately Doped Semi-Crystalline Polymers for High Performance Thermoelectrics

Yeran Lee et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates an ideal α-σ relationship in two degenerately doped semi-crystalline polymers using a sequential doping method, allowing the power factors to reach theoretical maxima and exhibiting metallic behavior in heavily doped films. The results show that the power factor maxima appear when the doping state switches from non-degenerate to degenerate, indicating the importance of an optimal α-σ relationship in enhancing TE performance and understanding charge transport in doped polymers.

Driving Force and Optical Signatures of Bipolaron Formation in Chemically Doped Conjugated Polymers

Matthew G. Voss et al.

Summary: Ultrafast spectroscopy was used in this study to investigate the nature of carriers created by doping with different molecular dopants, revealing that for a certain push-pull material, the charge carriers created by doping are non-conductive bipolarons, and not single polarons. Transient absorption spectroscopy can readily distinguish between the two types of charge carriers.

n-type charge transport in heavily p-doped polymers

Zhiming Liang et al.

Summary: It has been shown through Seebeck coefficient and Hall effect measurements that mobile electrons play a significant role in charge-carrier transport in p-conjugated polymers heavily p-doped with strong electron acceptors. Doping with oxidizing agents eliminates the transport gap at high doping concentrations, indicating a promising route to high-performance n-type organic thermoelectric materials.

Doped thieno[3,4-b]thiophene-based copolymers for p-type organic thermoelectric materials

Sicheng Wu et al.

Summary: The study found that both PTbTTVT and PTbTTVT-F exhibited good thermoelectric performance with the best power factor (PF) exceeding 35 μW m(-1) K-2. Despite PTbTTVT-F having worse hole mobility than PTbTTVT, it could achieve similar or even superior PF with suitable dopants. This suggests that polymers with less ordered stacking may be more tolerant to dopant disruption, and utilizing amorphous materials with high mobility could be a useful strategy for developing high-performance organic thermoelectric materials (OTEs).

Strategies and concepts in n-doped conjugated polymer thermoelectrics

Teck Lip Dexter Tam et al.

Summary: In recent years, there has been a groundbreaking improvement in the thermoelectric performance of n-doped conjugated polymers, with the power factor increasing from 10(-1) μW m(-1) K-2 using traditional materials to 80 μW m(-1) K-2 using new polymers and dopants. This review discusses the various strategies and concepts in chemical structure engineering that have led to this significant enhancement in performance, as well as considerations for device stability and contact resistance.
