Fast Intercalation of Lithium in Semi-Metallic γ-GeSe Nanosheet: A New Group-IV Monochalcogenide for Lithium-Ion Battery Application

Zheng Shu et al.

Summary: Van der Waals gaps in two-dimensional (2D) materials make them ideal for use as lithium anode materials. The limitation of good conductivity narrows the choice of 2D candidates, with graphite being the only satisfactory option so far. However, a new polymorph of layered germanium selenide (gamma-GeSe) has been discovered to have higher conductivity than graphite in its bulk phase, while its monolayer behaves as a semiconductor. This study investigates the possibility of using gamma-GeSe as an anode in Li-ion batteries through first-principles calculations. The results show that gamma-GeSe has fast lithium diffusion and low voltage fluctuation, indicating its potential application as an anode material.

Extrinsic Photoconduction Induced Short-Wavelength Infrared Photodetectors Based on Ge-Based Chalcogenides

Ting He et al.

Summary: 2D layered photodetectors have been widely studied for their optoelectronic properties, but are limited by bandgap. Extending detection waveband through extrinsic photoconduction can enhance functionalities. Ge-based chalcogenides demonstrate extrinsic photoconduction-induced short-wavelength infrared photodetectors for the first time, broadening detection waveband with assistance of Ge vacancies. This approach provides design strategies to enrich the functionalities of 2D layered photodetectors.

Tailoring the Energy Funneling across the Interface in InSe/MoS2 Heterostructures by Electrostatic Gating and Strain Engineering

Zhao-Yuan Sun et al.

Summary: It has been demonstrated that the light emission of InSe can be significantly enhanced by a maximum of 2.5 times through the energy funneling effect in MoS2/InSe type-I heterostructures, which can be tuned by electrostatic gating and maintain efficiency under tensile strain. Additionally, layer engineering of MoS2 changes the charge transfer at the heterointerface from funneling to exciton dissociation, with a maximum hole transfer rate of 9 x 10(8) s(-1) from InSe to MoS2. These findings provide potential for applications in quantum optoelectronics.

Optical properties of orthorhombic germanium selenide: an anisotropic layered semiconductor promising for optoelectronic applications

Agata Tolloczko et al.

Summary: Group-IV monochalcogenides, such as germanium selenide (GeSe), are anisotropic semiconducting van der Waals crystals with superior stability and optical properties suitable for optoelectronic applications. Experimental and theoretical results suggest that the optical properties of GeSe are dominated by direct transitions, with the fundamental band gap potentially being indirect. Polarization-resolved measurements reveal a strong dependence of optical transitions on light polarization, while photogenerated current measurements indicate high photoconversion efficiency for GeSe in photoconversion applications.

Summary: By anchoring an atomic catalyst above the phosphorene-like puckered surface of germanium selenide (GeSe), superior catalytic activity for nitrogen reduction reactions (NRR) can be achieved, with the Ru dimer decorated GeSe monolayer showing the best performance. The effectiveness of this activity is attributed to the Ru dimer filtering the states of GeSe, leading to the activation of the adsorbed N-2 bond efficiently.
