SiC particle reinforced Al matrix composites brazed on aluminum body for lightweight wear resistant brakes

Monica Ferraris et al.

Summary: This work aimed to develop an aluminum alloy brake disc with a wear-resistant SiC particle reinforced aluminum matrix composites (SiC/Al) on its surface. Different joining technologies, such as brazing and shrink fitting, were used to connect SiC/Al to the aluminum alloy. A functional graded structure was created by gradually increasing the SiC particle content in the aluminum matrix composites. Tribological tests demonstrated that the aluminum alloy brake disc with SiC/Al brazed on its surface offers promising technical opportunities.

Adsorption of Oxygen to High Entropy Alloy Surfaces for up to 2 ML Coverage Using Density Functional Theory and Monte Carlo Calculations

Tyler D. Dolezal et al.

Summary: The early stages of oxidation on the surface of a high-entropy alloy were studied using density functional theory and thermodynamic modeling. The surface was found to be highly reactive to oxygen, with high content of Ti and Zr increasing the reactivity. Presence of Nb and Al reduced the adsorption of oxygen. In regions with high content of Ti and Zr, inward diffusion of oxygen at low coverage was likely to occur.

Plane Machining by Inner-Jet Electrochemical Milling of TiB2/7050 Aluminum Matrix Composite

Summary: In this study, a reasonable tool cathode structure was selected through flow field simulation, and the material removal rate (MRR) and surface roughness were studied using different ECM parameters. For machining larger plane structures, a transverse movement of 7 mm was found to be the most suitable for achieving the best smoothness between the two processed areas.

Compressive response and microstructural evolution of in-situ TiB2 particle-reinforced 7075 aluminum matrix composite

Han Wang et al.

Summary: The hot forming behavior, failure mechanism, and microstructure evolution of in-situ TiB2 particle-reinforced 7075 aluminum matrix composite were investigated through isothermal compression tests. It was found that the composite exhibited different failure behaviors and microstructure evolution under different deformation conditions, with better formability observed at high temperature and low strain rate.

A comparative study on heterogeneous nucleation and mechanical properties of the fcc-Al/L12-Al3M (M = Sc, Ti, V, Y, Zr, Nb) interface from first-principles calculations

Yu Liu et al.

Summary: A comparative study of interfacial properties of fcc-Al/L1(2)-Al3M alloys was conducted through first-principles calculations. The fcc-Al(111)/L1(2)-Al3Nb(111) interface was found to have negative interfacial energy, making it energetically favorable despite thermodynamically unfavorable characteristics. The stability of formed interfaces was ranked based on energy favorability, showing the influence of interface properties on plastic deformation behavior of aluminum.
