Pharmaceutical pollution of the world's rivers

John L. Wilkinson et al.

Summary: Environmental exposure to active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) can have negative effects on ecosystems and human health. A global-scale study of API pollution in rivers highlights the highest concentrations in sub-Saharan Africa, south Asia, and South America, primarily in low- to middle-income countries with poor wastewater and waste management infrastructure. The most frequently detected APIs include carbamazepine, metformin, and caffeine, with some concentrations exceeding safe levels for aquatic organisms. Pharmaceutical pollution poses a global threat to environmental and human health and has implications for achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Occurrence and ecotoxicity of sulfonamides in the aquatic environment: A review

Weiyan Duan et al.

Summary: Rapid population growth and increasing demand for animal protein food have led to a continuous increase in global utilization of antibiotic, specifically sulfonamides (SAs), which are found to be ubiquitous in aquatic environments and pose a potential ecological risk. Research on different trophic level organisms shows that algae are the most susceptible to selected sulfonamide antibiotics, and some of these antibiotics pose a great risk to the aquatic system.

A hierarchical graphitic carbon nitride supported by metal-organic framework and copper nanocomposite as a novel bifunctional catalyst with long-term stability for enhanced carbon dioxide photoreduction under solar light irradiation

Elham Chamanehpour et al.

Summary: Metal-organic frameworks are highly efficient photocatalysts for CO2 photoreduction. The g-C3N4@Cu/ZIF-8 nanocomposite showed significant improvement in CH3OH production performance compared to ZIF-8, attributed to increased surface area, decreased electron-hole recombination rate, improved conductivity, and increased CO2 adsorption capacity. Reusability testing indicated a decrease in degradation efficiency of CO2 photoreduction from 82.1 to 71.8% after 5 reuses of the nanocomposite.

Interaction of Microplastics with Antibiotics in Aquatic Environment: Distribution, Adsorption, and Toxicity

Yanhua Wang et al.

Summary: This research examines the interaction mechanisms of microplastics (MPs) and antibiotics (ATs) in aquatic environments, as well as the impact of MPs on the bioavailability of ATs and the abundance of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). It discusses the factors affecting ATs adsorption on MPs and how MPs can affect the bioaccumulation and toxicity of ATs to aquatic organisms. Furthermore, it evaluates the enrichment of ARGs by MPs and presents research challenges and perspectives for the interactions between MPs and ATs.

Synthesis of Thiol modified magMCM-41 nanoparticles with rice husk ash as a robust, high effective, and recycling magnetic sorbent for the removal of herbicides

Reza Jazini Zadeh et al.

Summary: The study successfully removed 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid and glyphosate herbicides from aqueous solutions using Thiol modified magnetic mesoporous silica nanoparticles synthesized from extracted silica from rice husk ash. The highest removal rates were achieved at herbicide concentrations of 20 mg L-1, with 83.44% and 79.38% removal for 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid and glyphosate, respectively. The nano-adsorbent showed an adsorption capacity of 120.36 and 108.53 mg/g for the two herbicides. The Langmuir model provided a good fit for the adsorption isotherms, indicating the effectiveness of the synthesized nanoparticles for herbicide removal.
