Comprehensive Characterization of Shredded Lithium-Ion Battery Recycling Material

Christoph Peschel et al.

Summary: This study presents an analytical analysis of dry-shredded lithium-ion battery (LIB) materials with unknown composition. The elemental composition and (organic) compound speciation of samples from an industrial recycling process were analyzed. Through the identification and analysis of various components, such as transition metal stoichiometry, current collector metals, electrolyte residues, aging marker molecules, and polymer binder fingerprints, a comprehensive understanding of the base material for LIB recycling was obtained. By tracing the main electrode and electrolyte chemistries back to pristine materials, the study also evaluated possible lifetime application and aging. The reported analytics provided valuable information for value estimation and tailored recycling processes for undefined spent batteries.

Automated mineralogy as a novel approach for the compositional and textural characterization of spent lithium-ion batteries

Anna Vanderbruggen et al.

Summary: Mechanical recycling processes aim to separate particles based on physical and physico-chemical properties. Automated mineralogy is introduced as an analytical tool for monitoring and diagnosing LIB recycling approaches, providing important information on the characteristics of waste particles. The method is applicable for optimizing different separation unit operations in recycling of waste electronics and batteries.

Hydrometallurgical Process to Recover Cobalt from Spent Li-Ion Batteries

Neila Djoudi et al.

Summary: Research was conducted on recovering cobalt from leachate of lithium-ion batteries, showing a 99.8% recovery of cobalt (II) hydroxide at 25 degrees Celsius. Experimental parameters were studied to determine optimal cobalt recovery conditions, including yield, filterability, and selectivity, validated in a continuous reactor setting.
