Correlation of type II adsorption isotherms of water contaminants using modified BET equations

Giani de Vargas Briao et al.

Summary: This paper evaluates three modified BET equations against the original BET equation in correlating adsorption isotherms of water contaminants, showing that the modified equations outperform the original one; the Aranovich-Donohue equation stands out as a promising model for accurately tracing the atypical curve shapes of reactive blue 5G and naphthenic acid isotherms.

Toxic Mechanisms of Five Heavy Metals: Mercury, Lead, Chromium, Cadmium, and Arsenic

Mahdi Balali-Mood et al.

Summary: Industrial activities of the last century have led to increased human exposure to heavy metals such as mercury, lead, chromium, cadmium, and arsenic, resulting in acute or chronic poisonings through water, air, and food. These heavy metals accumulate in the body, causing toxic effects on various tissues and organs by disrupting cellular events and inducing oxidative stress. Common mechanisms of action of these metals include ROS generation, inhibition of antioxidant defense, enzyme inactivation, and selective binding to specific macromolecules, some leading to genomic instability and carcinogenicity through DNA damage and oxidative stress. Despite current knowledge, heavy metal poisoning incidents remain prevalent, necessitating preventive measures and effective treatment, possibly including chelation therapy.

Update on chitosan-based electrospun nanofibers for wastewater treatment: A review

Mohammad Nazmus Sakib et al.

Summary: Water pollution is a growing concern due to industrialization and human activities. The use of electrospun nanofibers is increasing rapidly, especially chitosan-based nanofibers, which offer advantages like non-toxicity, biocompatibility, and cost-effectiveness. While chitosan-based nanofibers have been widely used in various biomedical applications, their potential as adsorbents for heavy metals, dyes, and other pollutants is still relatively new and unexplored.
