Crystal Chemistry and Electronic Properties of the Al-Rich Compounds, Al2Cu, ω-Al7Cu2Fe and θ-Al13Fe4 with Cu Solution

Changming Fang et al.

Summary: In this study, the Cu solution behavior in the Al-Cu-Fe system was investigated using first-principles density functional theory (DFT). It was found that Cu prefers to dissolve in Al-7 at ambient conditions, forming a ternary theta-Al76Cu2Fe24 alloy. At high temperatures, Cu can dissolve in both Al-7 and Al-9, forming theta-Al76Cu2Fe24. The stability and properties of the Al-rich compounds were also studied. The importance of applying the Hubbard U correction to the standard DFT functionals for Cu-containing metallic materials was demonstrated. This study helps characterize intermetallic compounds in Cu-containing Al alloys and control Fe-containing intermetallic compounds in the solidification of Al-based alloys.

Wear Resistance of FeCrAlNbNi Alloyed Zone via Laser Surface Alloying on 304 Stainless Steel

Chunsheng Cui et al.

Summary: The wear resistance of 304 stainless steel was enhanced by depositing a FeCrAlNbNi alloyed zone (AZ) on its surface using laser surface alloying technology. The AZ showed a dense and fine structure with equiaxed dendrites as the main microstructure. The average microhardness of the AZ was about 2.6 times higher than that of the substrate due to the presence of iron compounds and iron-based solid solutions. The friction and wear performance of the AZ was better than that of the substrate at various temperatures, with the highest abrasion resistance observed at normal temperature. However, at elevated temperatures, the wear resistance initially decreased and then increased, with the formation of an Al2O3 layer at 600 degrees C greatly improving the wear resistance.

Effect of Diffusion on Dissimilar Welded Joint between Al0.8CoCrFeNi High-Entropy Alloy and S235JR Structural Steel

Ionelia Voiculescu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the metallurgical behavior of the Al0.8CoCrFeNi high-entropy alloy and S235JR structural steel welded with (Ni, Fe)-rich filler metal using Gas Tungsten Arc Welding method. The use of high-purity Ar 4.8 inert gas helped reduce oxidation effects and cracks in the weld, showing good adhesion between deposited metal and substrates. Energy-dispersive X-ray analysis revealed significant variations in Al and Ni concentrations due to fast diffusion of elements, resulting in the development of (Ni, Al)-rich compounds.

Alan Jadir Romero-Orozco et al.

Summary: In this study, joints of complex phase 780 advanced high strength steel were welded using different welding processes. The results showed that the joints welded with GMAW-P-brazing process exhibited significantly higher tensile strength compared to those welded with GMAW-P process. The study also found that there was higher evaporation of zinc in the GMAW-P process.

Microstructural Analysis and Mechanical Properties of a Hybrid Al/Fe2O3/Ag Nano-Composite

Khansaa Dawood Salman et al.

Summary: This study aims to investigate the microstructure and mechanical properties of an Al matrix incorporated with various amounts of Fe2O3 and a constant amount of Ag. The results show that Fe2O3 and Ag nanoparticles are uniformly distributed in the Al matrix, and the addition of 12 wt.% Fe2O3 + 1Ag significantly enhances the micro-hardness and compressive strength, while reducing the wear rate to a minimum.

Microstructure and Corrosion Performance of Aluminium Matrix Composites Reinforced with Refractory High-Entropy Alloy Particulates

Elias Ananiadis et al.

Summary: Novel aluminium matrix composites reinforced by MoTaNbVW refractory high-entropy alloy (HEA) particulates were fabricated by powder metallurgy. The composites exhibited low porosity, good homogeneity, few defects, and good distribution of the reinforcing phase in the Al matrix. However, increasing the volume of the reinforcing phase led to increased hardness values, while the Al-HEA composites showed susceptibility to localised forms of corrosion in 3.5% NaCl solution.

Study on Microstructure and In Situ Tensile Deformation Behavior of Fe-25Mn-xAl-8Ni-C Alloy Prepared by Vacuum Arc Melting

Yaping Bai et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that with the increase of Al content, the microstructure of Fe-25Mn-xAl-8Ni-C alloys changes, leading to decreasing elongation and initially increasing and then decreasing tensile strength. In situ tensile testing reveals that crack initiation mainly occurs at the interface between austenite and NiAl compound during stretching.
