Associations between Melatonin, Neuroinflammation, and Brain Alterations in Depression

Eunsoo Won et al.

Summary: Inflammatory conditions and disruptions in circadian rhythms, including alterations in the melatonin system, have been suggested as mechanisms underlying major depressive disorder. Melatonin, with its immunological and non-immunological actions, can suppress inflammation and influence neuroinflammation and neurotoxicity, leading to alterations in brain regions implicated in depression. Further research on the associations between melatonin, immune markers, and brain structure and function may help identify potential biomarkers for MDD.

Chronic corticosterone disrupts the circadian rhythm of CRH expression and m6A RNA methylation in the chicken hypothalamus

Yang Yang et al.

Summary: Chronic stress disrupts the circadian rhythms of CRH expression in the chicken hypothalamus, leading to dysfunction of the HPA axis. RNA m(6)A modification is involved in regulating circadian rhythms in the chicken hypothalamus under both basal and chronic stress conditions.

Melatonin alleviates hippocampal GR inhibition and depression-like behavior induced by constant light exposure in mice

Yang Yang et al.

Summary: The study found that chronic exposure to constant light leads to depression-like behavior in mice, possibly due to decreased melatonin and increased oxidative stress, which in turn results in GSK38-mediated GR inhibition affecting the emotional state of mice.

Exposure to constant light impairs cognition with FTO inhibition and m6A-dependent TrκB repression in mouse hippocampus

Yang Yang et al.

Summary: Exposure to chronic constant light impairs cognitive behavior in mice, associated with increased m(6)A levels in the hippocampus. The activation of CRY1/2 in the hippocampus leads to transcriptional inhibition of FTO, which affects Tr kappa B expression through m(6)A-dependent post-transcriptional regulation, contributing to impaired cognitive behavior.

Summary: The study shows that the neural circuit mechanisms in the hippocampus are similar between birds and mammals, but the resulting patterns of activity may vary quantitatively according to species-specific ethological needs.
