Mutational meltdown or controlled chain reaction: The dynamics of rapid plastome evolution in the hyperdiversity of Poaceae

Jie Wang et al.

Summary: The study investigates the genomic structural evolution associated with accelerated evolutionary rates. The authors sequenced plastomes from four Poaceae species and conducted comparative analyses with publicly available data. The results show that ancestral Poaceae had rapid substitution rates, which could be attributed to large-scale structural changes. Plastome size in Poaceae is positively correlated with intergenic spacers, repeats, and inverted repeats.

Genomic architectural variation of plant mitochondria-A review of multichromosomal structuring

Zhi-Qiang Wu et al.

Summary: Since their origin from alpha-Proteobacteria, mitochondrial genomes in plants have undergone divergent evolutionary trajectories, leading to unique features such as complex genomic arrangements and varying sizes. However, research on plant mitochondrial genomes is still limited, especially on the inheritance patterns and architectural variation of multichromosomal structures at different taxonomic levels.

Extensive variation in nucleotide substitution rate and gene/intron loss in mitochondrial genomes of Pelargonium

KyoungSu Choi et al.

Summary: The organelle genomes of Geraniaceae plants exhibit highly unusual features compared to other angiosperms, including rearranged plastomes, gene and intron loss, accelerated nucleotide substitution rates, and biparental inheritance of the plastome. A study examining 27 species of Geraniales, including 13 species of Pelargonium, found extensive gene and intron losses across the family. Pelargonium had the most gene depauperate lineage, with gene losses occurring multiple times and intron losses reflecting taxonomic relationships. Pelargonium showed elevated nucleotide substitution rates in both mitochondrial and plastid genes, different from most angiosperms, with potential different causes for substitutions in each organelle.

Both Conifer II and Gnetales are characterized by a high frequency of ancient mitochondrial gene transfer to the nuclear genome

Sheng-Long Kan et al.

Summary: The study on mitochondrial gene transfer/loss in gymnosperms reveals significant variations in gene content among different families, with missing genes observed in some families such as Conifer II and Gnetales. Additionally, the research suggests a two-step transfer mechanism for mitochondrial gene transfer in Conifer II and Gnetales. These findings provide insights into the evolutionary scenario of mitochondrial gene transfer in gymnosperms and factors affecting gene content variation in land plants.
