Effect of Subinhibitory Concentrations of Some Antibiotics and Low Doses of Gamma Radiation on the Cytotoxicity and Expression of Colibactin by an Uropathogenic Escherichia coli isolate

Radwa N. Morgan et al.

Summary: The study revealed that fluoroquinolones can almost eliminate the cytotoxicity of E. coli and significantly reduce the expression of the colibactin gene, while trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole only lowered the expression of the colibactin gene at lower concentrations. Ceftriaxone treatment had minimal effects on cytotoxicity and insignificant effects on the expression of the colibactin gene. Gamma radiation significantly increased the expression of the colibactin gene.

The relationship between the gut microbiome and host gene expression: a review

Robert G. Nichols et al.

Summary: The interaction between the gut microbiome and host gene expression is complex and bidirectional, influencing host pathways relevant for disease, such as immune development and energy metabolism. The gut microbiome can remodel host chromatin, cause differential splicing, alter the epigenetic landscape, and directly interrupt host signaling cascades. Emerging techniques like single-cell RNA sequencing and organoid generation have the potential to enhance our understanding of this relationship in the future.

Immune adjuvant effects of interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) of flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) against Edwardsiella tarda

Hongxiang Wang et al.

Summary: The study showed that flounder IFN-gamma could act as a promising adjuvant candidate for fish vaccination, significantly enhancing immune responses and protective effects against E. tarda. Co-vaccination with IFN-gamma could boost specific antibody levels and immune-related gene expressions, leading to higher survival rates in vaccinated fish.

High Plasticity of the Gut Microbiome and Muscle Metabolome of Chinese Mitten Crab ( Eriocheir sinensis ) in Diverse Environments

Xiaowen Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the gut microbiome and muscle metabolome of the Chinese mitten crab collected from different environments, revealing significant differences in composition and diversity. The results indicate that the gut microbiota and muscle metabolome of Eriocheir sinensis are significantly influenced by habitat environments, showing high phenotypic plasticity in response to environmental changes.

A First Report of Aeromonas veronii Infection of the Sea Bass, Lateolabrax maculatus in China

Baotun Wang et al.

Summary: The study identified the pathogenic bacterium Aeromonas veronii (strain 18BJ181) in commercially farmed sea bass in Zhuhai, China, which showed resistance to multiple antibiotics and exhibited virulence. This strain caused significant histological lesions in sea bass, highlighting the importance of understanding A. veronii infection in aquaculture.

Do Antibiotics Cause Obesity Through Long-term Alterations in the Gut Microbiome? A Review of Current Evidence

Natalia Vallianou et al.

Summary: The majority of animal studies and meta-analyses of human studies suggest a link between exposure to antibiotics, particularly early in life, and subsequent development of obesity due to alterations in the gut microbiota. Evidence in humans is inconclusive, necessitating well-designed, long-term longitudinal studies to examine this association further. Further large-scale, longer-term, longitudinal studies and randomized controlled trials in humans are needed to evaluate the causal relationship between early exposure to antibiotics and the subsequent development of overweight/obesity, as well as to assess the potential therapeutic interventions for prevention and management of obesity.

Environmental concentrations of antibiotics alter the zebrafish gut microbiome structure and potential functions

Masood Ur Rehman Kayani et al.

Summary: Long-term exposure to environmental concentrations of oxytetracycline and sulfamethoxazole significantly affects the taxonomic composition and metabolic pathways of the zebrafish gut microbiome, leading to an increase in abundance of pathogenic bacteria, antibiotic resistance genes, and associated pathways.
