Evaluation of cerebrovascular hemodynamics in vascular dementia patients with a new individual computational fluid dynamics algorithm

Jian Xie et al.

Summary: The study utilized a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) approach to detect cerebral hemodynamics, revealing that SVaD patients had reduced outlets, CAV, and tCBF index, along with an increased tCVR index compared to CNCs. Fewer outlets and more WMH were identified as risk factors for SVaD, partially mediated by the tCBF index.

Abnormal oxidative metabolism in the cuprizone mouse model of demyelination: An in vivo NIRS-MRI study

Mada Hashem et al.

Summary: Disruptions in oxidative metabolism were observed in demyelination process, with decreased oxygen extraction fraction, increased tissue oxygenation, and reduced metabolic rate of oxygen in the gray matter of the brain. This study highlights the potential of the novel multimodal imaging technique in assessing parameters associated with oxidative metabolism in neurological diseases in both mouse models and potentially in the human brain.

Continuous and entirely non-invasive method for cerebrovascular reactivity assessment: technique and implications

A. Gomez et al.

Summary: Continuous assessment of cerebrovascular reactivity in traumatic brain injury has been limited by the need for invasive monitoring, but recent advances in non-invasive technology like NIRS and rTCD offer new opportunities. These non-invasive methods can be utilized at various stages post-injury to provide continuous and detailed metrics without the need for costly neuroimaging techniques.

Measurement of muscle blood flow and O2 uptake via near-infrared spectroscopy using a novel occlusion protocol

Joshua J. Dennis et al.

Summary: The study presents a novel protocol that combines venous and arterial occlusions to determine muscle blood flow and O2 uptake during handgrip exercise from a single measurement point using near-infrared spectroscopy. Results show that the COMBO method provides valid estimates of (Q)(FDS) and (V) over dotO(2FDS) at rest and during static handgrip exercise up to 60%MVC, with a tendency to slightly underestimate (V) over dotO(2FDS) by up to 7%.

Utility of Transcranial Doppler in Moderate and Severe Traumatic Brain Injury: A Narrative Review of Cerebral Physiologic Metrics

Alwyn Gomez et al.

Summary: Transcranial Doppler (TCD) has been a valuable tool for non-invasively monitoring cerebral physiology in neurocritical care since the 1980s. It plays a significant role in managing patients with moderate and severe traumatic brain injury (TBI), providing insight into cerebral physiology and clinical evidence supporting its applications for determining intracranial pressure, detecting post-traumatic vasospasm, predicting patient outcome, and assessing cerebral autoregulation.

Cerebral Representation of Sound Localization Using Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy

Xuexin Tian et al.

Summary: This study used fNIRS to investigate the cerebral representation of different sound sources and found that the classification accuracy of sound localization tasks varied with the direction and intensity of the sound. The increase of oxyhemoglobin in the cortical regions of the brain was observed, showing different neural activity patterns between lateral and frontal sources in the auditory cortex and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex. These findings may contribute as a fundamental basis for further research on the use of fNIRS in spatial auditory studies.

Near Infrared Spectroscopy for High-Temporal Resolution Cerebral Physiome Characterization in TBI: A Narrative Review of Techniques, Applications, and Future Directions

Alwyn Gomez et al.

Summary: Multimodal monitoring, particularly near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS), is gaining traction in the critical care of TBI patients. NIRS, being non-invasive and able to interrogate microvascular and tissue oxygen metabolism, shows promise in improving personalized care and advancing precision medicine for TBI patients. The technology's applications in predicting functional outcomes and evaluating dysfunctional cerebrovascular reactivity offer new approaches for physiological monitoring of TBI patients.

Transcranial Doppler Based Cerebrovascular Reactivity Indices in Adult Traumatic Brain Injury: A Scoping Review of Associations With Patient Oriented Outcomes

Alwyn Gomez et al.

Summary: The study explores the association of continuous time-domain TCD based indices of cerebrovascular reactivity with global functional outcomes, cerebral physiologic correlates, and imaging evidence of lesion change. The findings suggest that these indices have prognostic utility following TBI. Indices based on mean flow velocities have the largest body of literature support, but recent studies indicate that indices based on systolic flow velocities may have the most prognostic utility and closely follow established measures of cerebrovascular reactivity.

Comparison of Newtonian and Non-newtonian Fluid Models in Blood Flow Simulation in Patients With Intracranial Arterial Stenosis

Haipeng Liu et al.

Summary: The study compared the differences in cerebral hemodynamic metrics between CFD models built with Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluid assumptions in patients with ICAS. It was found that while the rheological difference was not obvious in areas with high WSS in static models, it was enhanced in low WSS areas in transient models.
