Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

Prognostic value of platelet-related measures for overall survival in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Yusuke Ishibashi et al.

Summary: Platelet-related measures are important predictors of long-term outcomes in ESCC patients. A meta-analysis of 14 retrospective articles found high PLR to be significantly associated with poor overall survival, while platelet count, PDW, and MPV were not independent prognostic factors. Begg's funnel plots indicated low publication bias for PLR, PDW, and MPV.

Prognostic Utility of Platelet-Lymphocyte Ratio, Neutrophil-Lymphocyte Ratio and Monocyte-Lymphocyte Ratio in Head and Neck Cancers: A Detailed PRISMA Compliant Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Chellan Kumarasamy et al.

Summary: Inflammation plays a significant role in cancer development and progression, with PLR, NLR, and MLR being potential indicators of inflammation/prognostic markers. The study aimed to assess the prognostic efficacy of these markers in comparison to each other and investigate their potential in head and neck cancers. Results suggest that PLR, NLR, and MLR ratios are powerful prognostic markers in cancer that could guide treatment decisions, but further large-scale clinical studies are needed for clinical incorporation.
