Impact of Provider Type and Number of Providers on Surveillance Testing Among Survivors of Head and Neck Cancers

Summary: The study shows that only half of head and neck cancer survivors received recommended surveillance testing, with higher compliance seen in patients who followed up with both an oncologist and a PCP. Adjusting for providers seen did not explain variations in surveillance testing rates based on factors such as age, race, education, income level, and place of residence. Over time, there was a gradual increase in the use of PET scans and TFT during surveillance years.

The risk of recurrence in surgically treated head and neck squamous cell carcinomas: a conditional probability approach

Summary: This study found that in patients surgically treated for HNSCC, the probability of recurrence was highest during the first (17.3%) and second years (9.6%) after surgery, declining thereafter to less than 5.0% a year. The probability of recurrence was significantly higher for stage III-IV HNSCCs than for stage I-II HNSCCs in the first year after surgery (20.4% versus 10.0%; p < 0.01), but not thereafter.

Fear of Cancer Recurrence in Survivors of Human Papillomavirus-Associated Oropharyngeal Carcinoma

Summary: Clinical levels of fear of cancer recurrence were observed in approximately half of the HPV-associated oropharyngeal cancer survivors. Younger age, lower self-reported global quality of life, higher symptom interference, and greater burden of anxiety and depression were significantly associated with higher fear of cancer recurrence scores. Other demographic, tumor, and treatment-related factors were not statistically significant in relation to fear of cancer recurrence levels.
