Dopamine Assisted Self-Cleaning, Antifouling, and Antibacterial Coating via Dynamic Covalent Interactions

Anika B. Asha et al.

Summary: The rapid accumulation of dead bacteria or protein on a bactericidal surface can reduce its effectiveness and alter its biocidal activity. Therefore, developing a self-cleaning surface is crucial. In this project, a sugar-responsive self-cleaning coating has been developed, which can kill attached microbials and release dead cells and foulants.

Thermoresponsive, Pyrrolidone-Based Antifouling Polymer Brushes

Lucas W. Teunissen et al.

Summary: In this study, thermoresponsive poly(N-(2-methacryloyloxyethyl)pyrrolidone) brushes were synthesized and polymerized on silicon oxide substrates via surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization. The reversible thermoresponsive behavior of the brushes was demonstrated, and their antifouling properties were tested in aqueous media.

Design of a Venation-like Patterned Surface with Hybrid Wettability for Highly Efficient Fog Harvesting

Jie Guo et al.

Summary: Inspired by the Namib Desert beetle and leaf venation, a wettability-integrated system with hybrid coatings and venation-like patterns was designed and fabricated. The surface can create a 3D topography with a water layer and efficiently drain through the venation-like patterns, significantly enhancing fog harvesting ability. The synergistic mechanisms of fog harvesting enhancement by a wettability-integrated surface were further studied and discussed.

Multi-bioinspired self-cleaning energy-free cooling coatings

Bing-Ying Liu et al.

Summary: By mimicking the structures and functions of the Cyphochilus beetle, Saharan silver ant, and lotus leaf, a hierarchically structured self-cleaning coating was developed to achieve sustainable radiative cooling even under harsh conditions. This coating integrates strong sunlight reflection, high thermal-infrared emission, and robust anti-contamination, and can be applied on arbitrary surfaces, achieving a sub-ambient temperature drop of 13.8 degrees C under strong sunlight even with long-time outdoor exposure.

Beetle and cactus-inspired surface endows continuous and directional droplet jumping for efficient water harvesting

Xikui Wang et al.

Summary: Efficient water harvesting from vapor has been explored by designing a novel hybrid wetting surface inspired by the morphology of desert beetles and cactus thorns. The surface mimics the bumpy back of desert beetles for enhanced water nucleation, while the wedge-shaped topography enables unconventional droplet jumping and long-range transport, effectively increasing water harvesting efficiency.
