Numerical investigation of the effect of the closure law of wicket gates on the transient characteristics of pump-turbine in pump mode

Wenjie Wang et al.

Summary: Two modified two-stage broken line closure laws, MAS and MBS, are proposed to study the relationship between wicket gate closure law and pressure pulsation in pump turbines. The closure process is simulated using the DES model and analyzed in the time and time-frequency domains. The results show that the modified schemes can reduce the duration of pulsation and torque at Blade Passing Frequency, improving the transient characteristics of the pump turbines.

The influence of waves propagating with the current on the wake of a tidal stream turbine

Yuquan Zhang et al.

Summary: The presence of wind-waves significantly influences the performance and wake structure of tidal-stream turbines, particularly in terms of swirl numbers and turbulence intensities in the near field. The analysis reveals that wave effects are more pronounced at the top-tip and rotor-centerline water depth levels, indicating axisymmetric turbulent conditions dominated by the axial turbulence component.

Experimental investigation into effects of boundary proximity and blockage on horizontal-axis tidal turbine wake

Yuquan Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of different water depths and hub positions on the wake of a scaled turbine, revealing that the shear layer of the wake is transversally elliptical, downstream turbulence intensity transitions from trimodal to bimodal distribution, and wake rotational velocity is greater in the transversal plane than in the lateral plane.
