Area-based management of blue water fisheries: Current knowledge and research needs

Ray Hilborn et al.

Summary: Current management of pelagic fisheries in open ocean areas relies largely on regulating fishing effort or target catch, with calls for increased area-based interventions such as expanding marine protected areas. While successful in maintaining target commercial species, area-based management shows less clarity in achieving ecological or social goals. Limitations in mobility of target and bycatch species hinder effectiveness, and adaptive approaches may be favored due to shifting distributions from climate change. Further research and management actions are prioritized to enhance the effectiveness of area-based management.

Vegetation of natural and stabilized riverbanks and early effects of removal of bank fixation

Carolin Seele-Dilbat et al.

Summary: Rivers in Europe have been significantly altered in morphology and hydrology, leading to negative impacts on diversity and ecological functioning. In order to restore rivers, bank fixation has been removed and cross-sections have been widened. However, the effect of such restoration measures on riverine vegetation has been poorly studied. This research analyzed the early changes in vegetation following bank fixation removal in the Mulde River, Germany, and found that the restored sites had vegetation similar to natural riverbanks, indicating the reestablishment of dynamic processes.

An integrated assessment of the Good Environmental Status of Mediterranean Marine Protected Areas

Simonetta Fraschetti et al.

Summary: The study aimed to assess the environmental status of Mediterranean ecosystems, especially the impact of Marine Protected Areas on achieving Good Environmental Status. Results showed that most MPAs in the Western Mediterranean are in good/high status, but the overall environmental status is moderate, with macroalgal forests in poor condition.

Accounting for environmental and fishery management factors when standardizing CPUE data from a scientific survey: A case study for Nephrops norvegicus in the Pomo Pits area (Central Adriatic Sea)

Matteo Chiarini et al.

Summary: This study investigated the spatial distribution and abundance of the Norway lobster Nephrops norvegicus in the Central Adriatic Sea, and how they are influenced by environmental and fishery variables. By standardizing Catch Per Unit Effort (CPUE), the variability not directly related to fish abundance was removed. Significant drivers of catch distribution were found to be bathymetry, fishing pressure, dissolved oxygen, and salinity. The predictions from this study provide valuable information for evaluating the status of this important marine resource.

Summary: Understanding connectivity among subpopulations is crucial for identifying appropriate geographical scales for stock assessment and management in fisheries. Using integrated models, this study assessed connectivity in the Adriatic Sea for the species Nephrops norvegicus and identified at least three distinct subpopulations that need independent management.

Ecosystem-Based MSP for Enhanced Fisheries Sustainability: An Example from the Northern Adriatic (Chioggia-Venice and Rovigo, Italy)

Giulio Farella et al.

Summary: This research in the Adriatic Sea aimed to enhance fisheries sustainability through a repeatable Marine Spatial Planning framework. By using Decision Support Tools and a catalog of possible measures, it identified critical issues and facilitated effective communication with stakeholders, local authorities, and fishermen. The study highlighted the spatial impact of anthropogenic pressures on marine ecosystems and proposed a range of management measures to promote sustainable fisheries management at local and regional levels.

Spatial ecology of Norway lobster Nephrops norvegicus in Mediterranean deep-water environments: implications for designing no-take marine reserves

Maria Vigo et al.

Summary: Norway lobsters are important marine resources for European fisheries, but overfishing has led to declines in populations, particularly in the Mediterranean Sea. Implementing no-take marine reserves may help reverse this trend. Study on the spatial movements and behavior of Norway lobsters in these reserves provides valuable information for conservation and management. The findings suggest that small no-take marine areas focused on recovering Norway lobster populations can be effective.

The MPA Guide: A framework to achieve global goals for the ocean

Kirsten Grorud-Colvert et al.

Summary: Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) are tools for conserving marine ecosystems and biodiversity. However, confusion over the various MPA types has led to inconsistent outcomes. The MPA Guide provides a science-driven framework to improve the design, implementation, and evaluation of MPAs for achieving conservation goals.
