The Trajectories, Trends, and Opportunities for Assessing Urban Ecosystem Services: A Systematic Review of Geospatial Methods

Muhammad Zaman-ul-Haq et al.

Summary: This study utilized bibliometric analysis to explore the trends of remote sensing techniques in urban ecosystem services research. The results showed that approximately 30% of the selected articles used remote sensing data for assessment purposes. The majority of studies were conducted in economically developed and industrialized countries, but researchers from both developed and developing countries preferred open software and free data sources. In addition, methodologies based on land use and cover and assessments of regulating services were more commonly pursued.

Assessing Land Cover Transformation for Urban Environmental Sustainability through Satellite Sensing

Syed Atif Bokhari et al.

Summary: Rapid urbanization in Pakistan has led to land use and cover changes in planned and semi-planned urban areas. This study analyzes the spatial and temporal fluctuations in land use/land cover (LULC) transformations in Islamabad and Rawalpindi over the past forty years. The study reveals massive physical expansions and variations in land cover, with the proportion of built-up surfaces increasing significantly and cropland and shrubberies decreasing. The study highlights the importance of land availability, urban planning, and regulatory control in determining the speed, scale, and orientation of urbanization.

Analysis of the Development of Industrial Symbiosis in Emerging and Frontier Market Countries: Barriers and Drivers

Efrain Boom-Carcamo et al.

Summary: Industrial symbiosis promotes collaboration between companies for waste utilization and resource maximization, leading to advantages and benefits in social, environmental, and economic aspects. However, there is a research gap regarding industrial symbiosis in emerging and frontier market countries. This study aims to bridge this gap by providing an in-depth review and mapping of the literature on industrial symbiosis in these countries, offering important insights for future research.

Urban Strategies Enabling Industrial and Urban Symbiosis: The Case of Slovenia

Lucija Azman Momirski et al.

Summary: The study found intense awareness and legislative support in Slovenia for Industrial Symbiosis (IS) and Urban Symbiosis (UrS), in line with EU regulations. However, there has been surprisingly little waste-to-energy recovery since 2010. Reuse of by-products for energy or new products is almost non-existent. Urban strategies in Slovenia are insufficient in providing concrete guidelines for the development of IS and/or UrS.
