Sulfate-reducing and methanogenic microbial community responses during anaerobic digestion of tannery effluent

Victoria Alex Kibangou et al.

Summary: Microbial communities in the anaerobic digestion of tannery and associated slaughterhouse effluent were studied in terms of their structure, function, and response to physicochemical variables. The results showed that the composition of methane-producing and sulfide-producing microbial communities changed initially but stabilized after the start of biogas generation. Continuous stirring favored the metabolically versatile genus Methanosarcina and resulted in higher methane production.

Assessment of an Integrated and Sustainable Multistage System for the Treatment of Poultry Slaughterhouse Wastewater

Phumeza Akhona Dyosile et al.

Summary: This study assessed the performance of an integrated multistage plant for poultry slaughterhouse wastewater treatment, utilizing an enzymatic pre-treatment unit and a membrane bioreactor for optimal pollutant removal. Results showed that lipid reduction before treatment significantly improved the removal efficiency of COD, TSS, and FOG, even at high OLR levels.

Treatment of Poultry Slaughterhouse Wastewater (PSW) Using a Pretreatment Stage, an Expanded Granular Sludge Bed Reactor (EGSB), and a Membrane Bioreactor (MBR)

Honeil Basile Meyo et al.

Summary: This study successfully treated poultry slaughterhouse wastewater (PSW) by combining a biological pretreatment stage, an expanded granular sludge bed reactor (EGSB), and a membrane bioreactor (MBR). The system achieved contaminant removal rates exceeding 97%, meeting the discharge standards set by the City of Cape Town (CoCT). The EGSB and MBR played key roles in reducing concentrations of total suspended solids (TSS), chemical oxygen demand (COD), and fats, oil, and grease (FOG) to acceptable levels, demonstrating an effective and low-cost method for treating medium- to high-strength wastewater.
