The Missing Link in Resident Support for Tourism Events: The Role of Tolerance

Summary: The social exchange theory, a key theoretical framework for examining resident support, has often been criticized for its ambiguity and difficulty in measurement. This study builds on previous research and introduces the concept of tolerance as a missing link to better understand and measure the exchange process. The results demonstrate that resident tolerance partially mediates the effects of perceived benefits and fully mediates the effects of perceived costs on resident support for events. In addition, resident empowerment is identified as a critical factor in explaining tolerance. Overall, this study contributes to the literature by exploring and explaining the unbalanced impacts of benefits and costs on support reported in previous studies, while offering a more comprehensive understanding of how residents translate the perceived impacts of tourism events into support through tolerance.

Influence of Event and Place Image on Residents' Attitudes Toward and Support for Events
