Use of Digestate as Organic Amendment and Source of Nitrogen to Vegetable Crops

Carmo Horta et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the fertilising value of the solid fraction of digestate as an organic amendment and a nitrogen source, and found that it had beneficial effects on soil organic matter, soil pH, and exchangeable bases. The solid fraction was able to partially replace mineral nitrogen fertilisation. Fertilisation plans should consider the ratio between organic nitrogen and total nitrogen.

The effect of plant biostimulants on the macronutrient content and ion ratio of several lettuce ( Lactuca sativa L.) cultivars grown in a plastic house

Arshad Abdulkhalq Yaseen et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the effects of plant biostimulants on the macronutrient content and ion ratio of three lettuce cultivars. The results showed that Willow bark extract and the combination of Willow bark extract and Bistep had the greatest impact on lettuce, while Bistep had the least effect. The macronutrient composition and ionic ratios of lettuce cultivars varied according to the seasons and climate conditions.

Digestate Application on Two Different Soils: Agricultural Benefit and Risk

Maria Rosaria Panuccio et al.

Summary: The study found that neutral soil and alkaline soil responded differently to solid and liquid fractions of digestate, depending mainly on soil characteristics. Solid fraction was more effective in improving soil quality and microbial biomass carbon, and had more agricultural and environmental advantages than liquid fraction.

Effect of Biostimulants on Yield and Quality of Cherry Tomatoes Grown in Fertile and Stressed Soils

Metin Turan et al.

Summary: The study found that the use of plant biostimulants can improve plant growth and yield under different soil conditions, with better results in stressed soil environments. Different biostimulants have varying effects on mineral content and other indicators, but overall they can enhance plant antioxidant activity and reduce the negative effects of abiotic challenges.

Coupling anaerobic digestion and pyrolysis processes for maximizing energy recovery and soil preservation according to the circular economy concept

Saida Tayibi et al.

Summary: The study investigated the synergy of coupling biochar with liquid digestate for agronomic purposes, finding that adding biochar increased leaching of nutrients but had a positive impact on seed germination and aerial dry biomass production in wheat plants.

Industrial symbiosis of anaerobic digestion and pyrolysis: Performances and agricultural interest of coupling biochar and liquid digestate

Saida Tayibi et al.

Summary: The study explored an innovative cascading biorefinery concept that combines anaerobic digestion with pyrolysis of digestate to improve energy recovery and fertilizer quality from organic waste. Anaerobic co-digestion of quinoa residues with wastewater sludge demonstrated stability and high methane production. Pyrolysis of solid digestate yielded biochar, bio-oil, and syngas, with potential applications in agronomy. Coupling biochar with liquid digestate enhanced tomato plant growth but also increased ammonia volatilization.
