Research directions for supply chain management in facing pandemics: an assessment based on bibliometric analysis and systematic literature review

Marcelle Candido Cordeiro et al.

Summary: This study conducted a bibliometric analysis and systematic literature review on 196 articles to investigate the impact of pandemics on the resilience of supply chains and the models used in response to COVID-19. The findings suggest that weaknesses in supply chains can inform public policies and assist managers in making decisions.

Open-source modeling of a low-carbon urban neighborhood with high shares of local renewable generation

Sebastian Zwickl-Bernhard et al.

Summary: This study examines how an urban neighborhood in Vienna, Austria can optimally utilize its local renewable energy potential to meet its electricity, heat, and cooling demands. By analyzing different energy technology portfolio studies, various trade-offs between energy technology utilization, local supply within the community, and external supply are identified, revealing the strengths and weaknesses of different energy supply options. The research findings support sustainable urban energy planning and suggest future enhancements to the open-source modeling approach.

Assessing the need for flexibility technologies in decarbonized power systems: A new model applied to Central Europe

Mattia Maeder et al.

Summary: The study introduces a new power system optimization model named FLEXIES to determine the cost-efficient deployment of renewable electricity generation technologies and flexibility technologies. Through a case study of power systems in Central Europe, it is found that low-carbon electricity generation, batteries, and power-to-gas are cost-efficient in 2050, while interconnections reduce total electricity generation, system costs, and carbon equivalent emissions.

A bibliometric study about energy, environment, and climate change

Yali Hou et al.

Summary: The study found that the United States, United Kingdom, and China had the highest number of published papers in the field of energy, environment, and climate change. A significant number of co-cited papers laid a solid foundation for research from 2006 to 2016. Between 2017 and 2019, there was an acceleration in the growth rate of published articles, focusing on strategies to address climate change.

Climate change awareness: Empirical evidence for the European Union*

Donatella Baiardi et al.

Summary: This paper evaluates the public attitudes towards climate change in Europe by analyzing data from the Special Eurobarometer surveys. The study reveals that environmental concerns are influenced by factors such as income, social trust, education levels, weather-related discomfort, media coverage, demographics, and economic losses from extreme weather events. Additionally, it found a significant impact from events in 2017 and 2019, which are linked to Donald Trump's denial campaigns, the U.S. withdrawal from the Paris Agreement, and Greta Thunberg's environmental activism.

Simulating the forest fuel market as a socio-ecological system with spatial agent-based methods: A case study in Carinthia, Austria

Johannes Scholz et al.

Summary: This paper presents an agent-based modeling and simulation approach to study the forest fuel supply chain for heating plants, focusing on timber harvesting by forest enterprises and competition for wood chips. Through different simulation scenarios, it is found that the behavior of small forest owners plays a crucial role in the supply of forest fuels. Increased transport distances and the reliance on biomass imports are observed in the long run for areas such as Carinthia, Austria. Recommendations include the need to plan forest fuel supply and transport distances effectively to reduce carbon footprint.
