The Future of Food: Domestication and Commercialization of Indigenous Food Crops in Africa over the Third Decade (2012-2021)

Roger R. B. Leakey et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the transition from ethnobotany to a deeper scientific understanding of African agroforestry tree products and their integration into diversified farming systems for multiple benefits. It highlights the progress made in research on indigenous tree species in Africa, but also identifies areas that require further investigation. The paper emphasizes the importance of integrating indigenous trees into agroecosystems and acknowledges the recognition of their significance in rural communities and African agriculture.

Macrologistics instrumentation: Integrated national freight-flow and logistics cost measurement

Jan H. Havenga et al.

Summary: The objective of this research is to aid macrologistics decision-making by developing and interpreting national freight-flow and logistics cost measurements. The results show that South Africa's macrologistics costs exceed those of trading partners, with road transport being the main contributor. Investing in domestic intermodal solutions can reduce both transport and externality costs, leading to improved competitiveness and supporting economic and ecological development objectives.

Assessment of International Trade-Related Transport CO2 Emissions-A Logistics Responsibility Perspective

Durdica Stojanovic et al.

Summary: International supply chains contribute significantly to CO2 emissions, but current methodologies for assessing freight transport emissions at the national level often overlook these international perspectives. This research introduces a novel approach using logistic responsibility to estimate and allocate CO2 emissions from international freight transport between trade countries, based on Incoterms(R) rules in sales contracts. The introduced RTE-index aims to enhance awareness of environmental considerations among trade parties and provide new insights for environmental transport policy actions.

Optimised Selection of Water Supply and Irrigation Sources-A Case Study on Surface and Underground Water, Desalination, and Wastewater Reuse in a Sahelian Coastal Arid Region

Antonio Freire Diogo et al.

Summary: This study presents an economic, sustainable, resilient, and integrated solution for the water supply and landscape irrigation of a large touristic complex in an arid to semi-arid coastal region of Cape Verde. By exploring underground water, surface water, treated wastewater, and desalinated sea water, and using a multi-criteria decision-making process, the best solution was selected.

National and International Policies and Policy Instruments in the Development of Agroforestry in Chad

Divine Foundjem-Tita et al.

Summary: The potential of agroforestry in improving livelihoods, mitigating climate change and environmental degradation has been widely recognized, but not fully exploited due to adverse policies and regulations. Chad lacks a specific agroforestry policy, but opportunities can be found in existing policy documents. Gaps in laws allow rent-seekers to charge access fees for trees on forest and farmland.

Contribution of Climate-Smart Agriculture Technologies to Food Self-Sufficiency of Smallholder Households in Mali

Bouba Traore et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the effectiveness of scaling climate-smart agriculture technologies in addressing food insecurity in farming communities in Mali. Results show significant increases in crop yields with the application of these technologies, leading to improved food self-sufficiency and reduction in food insecurity. The success of climate-smart agriculture in the Sahel region depends on the capacity of farming households and local extension agents to understand and adopt responsive technologies in the face of environmental, economic, and social challenges posed by climate change.

Resilience and Conflict: Evidence from Mali

Marco D'Errico et al.

Summary: This paper explores the relationship between conflict and household resilience in Mali's Central Sahel cross-border area. Certain types of agricultural households are found to have a higher probability of exposure to conflict, while factors such as social networks, education, food consumption, and access to public transfers also play a role in coping mechanisms against conflict. Further analysis is needed to fully understand the contextual specificities of local resilience capacity and the drivers of conflict.

Spatiotemporal Response of Vegetation to Rainfall and Air Temperature Fluctuations in the Sahel: Case Study in the Forest Reserve of Fina, Mali

Karamoko Sanogo et al.

Summary: This study identified the vegetation characteristics in response to precipitation and temperature fluctuations in the Afircan Sahel region, demonstrating a stronger response of vegetation to climate fluctuations in agriculturally dominated land at a shorter time lag, and a stronger response in Bare-dominated land at a longer time lag. The findings highlight the modulation of vegetation response to climate fluctuations by land-use/cover dynamics.
