Land-use modifications and ecological implications over the past 160 years in the central Apennine mountains

Arianna Ferrara et al.

Summary: By studying the land-use changes in central Italy, it was found that grasslands were transformed into arable lands from 1850 to 1954, but later changed back into new grasslands and forests in the following 60 years. Forests saw a slow but continuous expansion from 1850 to 2010. Only a small percentage of forest and grassland patches (14% and 16%, respectively) maintained ecological continuity.

Long-Term Land Use and Landscape Pattern Changes in a Marshland of Hungary

Gergo Nemeth et al.

Summary: This study explores the landscape change trends in the marshes on the southern shore of Lake Balaton, finding a decline in wetland area over the past few centuries but some expansion in recent decades. Restoration of wetland habitats can enhance the provision level of ecosystem services. The increased landscape diversity and fragmentation of natural habitats are highlighted by landscape metrics.

Olive groves around the lake. A ten-thousand-year history of a Cretan landscape (Greece) reveals the dominant role of humans in making this Mediterranean ecosystem

Isabelle Jouffroy-Bapicot et al.

Summary: The paper presents a new investigation of Lake Kournas in Crete, analyzing a 10,000-year land cover and land use history. The study reveals the non-linear development of ecosystem near the lake, with linkages between vegetation, biodiversity, fire, human impact, erosion, and climate change. Olive cultivation played a major role in the socio-ecosystem interactions in the Mediterranean region, but also destabilized soils.

Climate indices in historical climate reconstructions: a global state of the art

David J. Nash et al.

Summary: Narrative evidence within historical documents and inscriptions serves as a valuable record of climate variability, with the common approach of generating ordinal-scale climate indices to convert such qualitative information. There is considerable variability in the types of phenomena reconstructed using an index approach, as well as in the practices of index development across different regions worldwide.
