Criticality Metrics for Automated Driving: A Review and Suitability Analysis of the State of the Art

Summary: The large-scale deployment of automated vehicles has the potential to greatly change transportation modalities. However, ensuring the safe operation of these vehicles in open environments remains a challenge. Criticality metrics can be used to objectively and computationally analyze traffic conflicts. This article reviews the state of the art of criticality metrics and proposes a suitability analysis method to assist practitioners in selecting appropriate measurement tools.
