An overview of nitrogen oxides emissions from biomass combustion for domestic heat production

S. Ozgen et al.

Summary: To meet the climate and energy objectives of the European Union, the heating and cooling sector needs to reduce its reliance on fossil fuels. Solid biomass is seen as a renewable and carbon-neutral alternative, but there are concerns about its impact on air quality when burned in small-scale domestic appliances, particularly in terms of particulate matter and nitrogen oxides emissions. The focus of this study is to review the literature on nitrogen oxides emissions from these sources, discussing formation mechanisms, control techniques, and the influence of fuel composition and operating conditions gathered from experimental data.

Analysis and monitoring of the combustion performance in a biomass power plant

Joao Pedro Silva et al.

Summary: Combustion air systems play an increasingly important role in emission reduction and improving boiler performance, with primary air temperature, distribution, and grate vibration significantly impacting biomass conversion and mixing. Studies have shown that adjusting vibration periods and optimizing primary air supply can effectively reduce CO emissions in biomass power plants, while utilizing smoke gas cooling for heat recovery can lead to significant energy savings without corrosion concerns.
