Assessment of PERSIANN-CCS, PERSIANN-CDR, SM2RAIN-ASCAT, and CHIRPS-2.0 Rainfall Products over a Semi-Arid Subtropical Climatic Region

Muhammad Naveed Anjum et al.

Summary: This study compares the performance of four satellite-based rainfall products in Punjab Province, Pakistan. The findings suggest that CHIRPS-2.0 and SM2RAIN-ASCAT products perform better in tracking rainfall variability, especially on a seasonal scale. Therefore, it is recommended to use these products for hydro-meteorological investigations in the region.

Assessing Education from Space: Using Satellite Earth Observation to Quantify Overcrowding in Primary Schools in Rural Areas of Nigeria

Ana Andries et al.

Summary: Nigeria is facing the challenge of overcrowded classrooms in rural primary schools, which has a negative impact on educational performance and the achievement of universal basic education. This research utilized satellite Earth Observation data and Nigerian government data to analyze the size of teaching spaces and overcrowding in a sample of rural primary schools. The findings indicate that 81.4% of the schools examined were overcrowded. The study highlights the potential of using satellite data to address this socio-economic issue.

The Skills of Medium-Range Precipitation Forecasts in the Senegal River Basin

Mekonnen Gebremichael et al.

Summary: This study assesses the skill of medium-range precipitation forecasts derived from the Global Forecast System (GFS) in the Senegal River Basin. The results show that while GFS captures the overall spatial and monthly pattern of rainfall in the region, it tends to overestimate rainfall in wet areas and slightly underestimate it in dry areas. The daily GFS forecast skill is found to be low over Manantali but slightly higher over Foum Gleita and Diama. For 15-day accumulation, GFS forecast shows higher skill over Manantali and Diama but does not change much over Foul Gleita compared to daily rainfall forecasts. The study also highlights the better performance of the satellite-only product IMERG Early compared to GFS. Further improvements in the accuracy of GFS forecasts are suggested, and IMERG Early is identified as a potential source of data for this purpose.

Drought Identification and Trend Analysis Using Long-Term CHIRPS Satellite Precipitation Product in Bundelkhand, India

Varsha Pandey et al.

Summary: This study utilized CHIRPS data to analyze drought conditions in India's Bundelkhand region, identifying nine severe drought events on average in all districts over the past 38 years, with the most intense drought occurring in 1983-1985. The results revealed a significant decreasing trend in SPI1 during the post-monsoon season, indicating an increasing severity of meteorological drought in the area.

Qiang Wang et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the accuracy of four widely used long time series Satellite-based precipitation products in capturing extreme precipitation and streamflow events in a humid region of southern China. Different products show varying performances in extreme precipitation detection and streamflow simulation, with TMPA demonstrating superior results in both extreme precipitation detection and hydrological model simulation.

Evaluation of precipitation elasticity using precipitation data from ground and satellite-based estimates and watershed modeling in Western Nepal

Rocky Talchabhadel et al.

Summary: The study focused on evaluating the performance of three SPEs in the WRR basin in Western Nepal, with IMERG being the most superior among them. Bias-correction of daily precipitation data using linear correction factors at a mean monthly scale improved results for all SPEs. The precipitation elasticity of the study area ranged from +1.3 to +2.0, indicating that a 1.0% change in precipitation will result in a 1.5% change in river discharge.

Ashley Wild et al.

Summary: The study evaluates the performance of different satellite rainfall observations in the South West Pacific Region, with GSMaP performing best in low rain gauge density areas and CHIRPS showing consistent performance across all six sub-regions. Recommendations are made for the use of satellite precipitation estimates in the South West Pacific Region based on the results.

The Impact of Rainfall Movement Direction on Urban Runoff Cannot Be Ignored in Urban Hydrologic Management

Yesen Liu et al.

Summary: The study shows that the direction of rainfall movement has a significant impact on peak runoff, up to 20%, but can decrease to less than 5% under heavy rainfall conditions. Additionally, the impact of rainfall movement direction is symmetrical and related to the direction of the river, affecting peak runoff in the downstream urban areas.
