Exciton Delocalization Counteracts the Energy Gap: A New Pathway toward NIR-Emissive Dyes

Alexei Cravcenco et al.

Summary: Exciton coupling in J-aggregates leads to shifted electronic transitions, lowering the excited state energy and allowing for emission in the near-infrared regime. The combination of superradiance and decreased nonradiative relaxation rate makes J-aggregates more emissive than monomeric counterparts, despite the red-shift in absorption. The reorganization energy suppression in J-aggregates enables increased emissivity in the NIR regime by circumventing the common belief of large nonradiative relaxation rates with lowered excited state energies.
