Longitudinal and cross-sectional associations of adherence to 24-hour movement guidelines with cardiometabolic risk

Marja H. Leppanen et al.

Summary: The study found that most children aged 6-8 adhered to the 24 h movement guidelines initially, but adherence decreased over a 2-year follow-up. Meeting the guidelines was associated with lower cardiometabolic risk factors, yet these associations were partly explained by body fat levels. Promoting movement behaviors, especially physical activity, and maintaining a healthy weight in early childhood is important for supporting cardiometabolic health in children.

Moderate-to-vigorous intensity physical activity from young adulthood to middle age and metabolic disease: a 30-year population-based cohort study

Summary: The study found that lower MVPA scores in adolescence were associated with increased risk of diabetes and dyslipidemia in adulthood. Additionally, for each annual unit reduction in MVPA scores, there was an increased risk of diabetes and high triglyceride levels. Analyzing various MVPA trajectory groups showed that individuals who were most active in adolescence but experienced sharp declines in midlife had higher odds of developing certain metabolic diseases compared to those who maintained high activity levels.

Adolescent physical activity, sedentary behavior and sleep in relation to body composition at age 18years in urban South Africa, Birth-to-Twenty plus Cohort

Summary: This study found that patterns of physical activity, sedentary behavior, and sleep during adolescence are related to young-adult body composition in urban South Africa. These modifiable behaviors may serve as pathways for public health interventions to address overweight and obesity in low- or middle-income countries.
