Lung ultrasound features predict admission to the neonatal intensive care unit in infants with transient neonatal tachypnoea or respiratory distress syndrome born by caesarean section

Antonio Poerio et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the reliability of lung ultrasound in predicting the need for admission to the NICU in infants born by caesarean section. The results showed that the 3P-LUS examination performed 30 minutes after birth is a reliable tool to identify those term and late preterm infants born by CS who will require NICU admission.

Ultrasonography for airway management

Paul J. Zetlaoui

Summary: Ultrasonography offers a new approach to airway management in anesthesia and intensive care by visualizing the airway, assessing risk, anticipating difficulties, and confirming correct tube placement and lung ventilation. It can also assist in resolving acute ventilatory problems intraoperatively.

Clinical characteristics and outcomes of neonates with polymicrobial ventilator-associated pneumonia in the intensive care unit

Hsiao-Chin Wang et al.

Summary: In the NICU, 25.4% of neonatal VAP cases are caused by multiple microorganisms, often occurring in neonates with prolonged intubation and underlying bronchopulmonary dysplasia. Despite more frequent modification of therapeutic antibiotics in polymicrobial VAP cases, most clinical features, therapeutic responses, and final outcomes do not significantly differ from monomicrobial VAP cases.

Lung ultrasound in a tertiary intensive care unit population: a diagnostic accuracy study

Jasper M. Smit et al.

Summary: The study compared lung ultrasound to thoracic CT in ICU patients and found that lung ultrasound is an adequate diagnostic modality in a tertiary ICU population for detecting consolidations, interstitial syndrome, pneumothorax, and pleural effusion. Care should be taken to avoid interpreting lung ultrasound results deterministically as multiple respiratory conditions can coexist in one patient.
