Barriers to safety and efficiency in robotic surgery docking

Lucy Cofran et al.

Summary: Observations were made on flow disruptions during 45 procedures in multiple specialties at three hospitals. Results revealed that the docking process in robotic assisted surgery was more prone to disruptions, particularly in room organization, supply retrieval, patient positioning, and robot maneuvering.

RAS-NOTECHS: validity and reliability of a tool for measuring non-technical skills in robotic-assisted surgery settings

Julia Schreyer et al.

Summary: A new observational tool for assessing multidisciplinary NTS in robotic-assisted surgery, RAS-NOTECHS, was developed and shown to be reliable in preliminary application. Through a multi-method approach, 15 RAS-specific behavioral markers were identified and validated by experts. Strong inter-rater agreement was demonstrated for most markers in real-world observations.

Serious Games for Improving Technical Skills in Medicine: Scoping Review

Tycho Joan Olgers et al.

Summary: This review evaluates the current use of serious games for improving technical skills in medicine and their validation status. Five different serious games are discussed, with only one almost fully validated. Serious games could be an alternative way of learning, but their validation is mostly incomplete. Multiple validation frameworks exist, but the best one is still unknown.

Comparing nurse leader and manager perceptions of and strategies for nurse engagement using a positive deviance approach: A qualitative analysis

Amanda C. Blok et al.

Summary: Nurse leaders and managers have different perspectives on employee engagement, with factors such as attitude contagion, organizational factors, and leadership support influencing nurse engagement. There are differences in perceived roles and constraints to engaging nurse staff between managers of units with high versus low engagement. Collaborative partnerships between leaders and managers are essential for promoting employee engagement in nursing management.

Room Size Influences Flow in Robotic-Assisted Surgery

Falisha Kanji et al.

Summary: The study explored the impact of operating room size on the disruptions during robotic-assisted surgeries, finding that room size was associated with the frequency of disruptions during the procedures. It also highlighted the spatial challenges involved in integrating surgical robots and emphasized the importance of considering technological needs before implementation for patient safety benefits.

Gamification of health professions education: a systematic review

A. E. J. van Gaalen et al.

Summary: Gamification, using game attributes in non-gaming contexts, is increasingly employed in health professions education to optimize learning outcomes. Studies show that combining assessment attributes with conflict/challenge attributes in gamification can enhance use of learning material and improve learning outcomes.
