COVID-19: Discovery, diagnostics and drug development

Tarik Asselah et al.

Summary: COVID-19 started in Wuhan in 2019 and has become a global pandemic. The virus responsible, SARS-CoV-2, shares a high sequence identity with bat- and pangolin-derived coronaviruses. Risk factors for SARS-CoV-2 infection include age, obesity, diabetes, and hypertension.

Multiple Introductions of SARS-CoV-2 C.37 Lambda lineage in the Southern Brazilian region

Ighor Gomes Arantes et al.

Summary: The Lambda variant of SARS-CoV-2 has been classified as a variant of concern by the World Health Organization due to its increased infectivity and immune escape qualities. Evidence suggests that this variant has been introduced multiple times in Brazil, posing a growing epidemiological threat in South America.

The effect of environmental conditions on the rate of RNA degradation in dried blood stains

Nicole Heneghan et al.

Summary: The relationship between RNA degradation and the age of a bloodstain was investigated by storing bloodstains in different environments with varying temperatures and relative humidities. The results showed that higher temperatures and humidities accelerated RNA degradation, while a cold and dry environment better preserved the integrity of the transcriptome in dried bloodstains. Ongoing investigations are aiming to incorporate environmental conditions of crime scenes into the estimation of sample age.

Estimated transmissibility and impact of SARS-CoV-2 lineage B.1.1.7 in England

Nicholas G. Davies et al.

Summary: A new variant of SARS-CoV-2 has emerged in England, with a higher reproduction number and potential for large resurgences of COVID-19 cases. Without stringent control measures, it is projected that COVID-19 hospitalizations and deaths in England for the first 6 months of 2021 will exceed those in 2020. The variant has spread globally and exhibited similar transmission increases in Denmark, Switzerland, and the United States.

Epitope-Functionalized Gold Nanoparticles for Rapid and Selective Detection of SARS-CoV-2 IgG Antibodies

Tedrick Thomas Salim Lew et al.

Summary: The study developed a colorimetric serological assay to detect SARS-CoV-2 IgG in patients' plasma using short antigenic epitopes conjugated to gold nanoparticles. The specific bivalent binding between SARS-CoV-2 antibodies and epitope-functionalized AuNPs triggers nanoparticle aggregation, allowing for rapid and distinct detection of SARS-CoV-2 infection in clinical samples.

Reduced sensitivity of SARS-CoV-2 variant Delta to antibody neutralization

Delphine Planas et al.

Summary: The SARS-CoV-2 B.1.617 Delta variant, first identified in India in 2020, has become dominant in some regions and is spreading to many countries. This variant shows resistance to certain monoclonal antibodies and antibodies in convalescent sera, as well as reduced neutralization by some COVID-19 vaccines. Administration of two doses of the vaccine is needed for a neutralizing response against the Delta variant.
