Long-lived sterile neutrinos at Belle II in effective field theory

Guanghui Zhou et al.

Summary: Large numbers of tau leptons produced at Belle II could potentially decay into long-lived sterile neutrinos, resulting in displaced-vertex signatures. By performing Monte-Carlo simulations, we find that Belle II can probe non-renormalizable dimension-six operators involving a single sterile neutrino up to a few TeV in the new-physics scale.

Ab Initio Calculation of the Contact Operator Contribution in the Standard Mechanism for Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay

R. Wirth et al.

Summary: Starting from chiral nuclear interactions, the study evaluates the contribution of the leading-order contact transition operator to the nuclear matrix element of neutrinoless double-beta decay, showing that the contact term enhances the NME in calculations with commonly used chiral two- plus three-nucleon interactions. The study also examines the dependence of the amplitude on similarity renormalization group scale and chiral expansion order of the nuclear interaction, and finds that both dependences can be compensated by readjusting the low-energy constant.

Summary: The study provides complete and independent bases of effective operators involving light sterile neutrinos in nu SMEFT and nu LEFT models, systematically parametrizing all possible physical effects. The results show the numbers of independent operators at different mass dimensions for one/three generations of fermions in nu SMEFT, and for two generations of up-type quarks and three generations of all other fermions in nu LEFT.

Effective field theory approach to lepton number violating τ decays

Yi Liao et al.

Summary: In this study, lepton number violating processes in the framework of effective field theory are investigated, focusing on tau decays involving pseudoscalars pi(+) and K+ at low energies. The analysis suggests that current experimental bounds are not sufficient to constrain the Wilson coefficients, but if new physics scale is above 1 TeV, the branching ratios will be well below experimental limits. Additional research is conducted to estimate hadronic uncertainties and improve the convergence of chiral perturbation in tau decays.

Long-lived sterile neutrinos at the LHC in effective field theory

Jordy de Vries et al.

Summary: This study examines the potential of displaced-vertex search for sterile neutrinos at the LHC in the nu SMEFT framework, investigating production and decay mechanisms including standard mixing and higher-dimensional operators. Sensitivities for detecting sterile neutrinos in various experiments were explored, with simulations showing that high-luminosity LHC experiments are competitive in probing EFT operators.

Low energy effective field theory operator basis at d ≤ 9

Hao-Lin Li et al.

Summary: The article discusses obtaining complete operator bases at mass dimensions 5 to 9 for the low energy effective field theory, which describe various physics effects between the QCD scale and the electroweak scale. The algorithm used ensures the independence of the operator basis from the equation of motion, integration by parts, and flavor relations, and its validity in the context of LEFT with massive fermions has been proven. Additionally, a large number of operators are listed for three and one generations of fermions, categorized based on baryon and lepton number violations, as they are of great phenomenological relevance.

Summary: The study investigates the effect of interference on lepton number violating and conserving meson decays in a TeV-scale left-right symmetric model with degenerate RH neutrinos, showing that resonant enhancement may occur within a certain mass range. The rates of LNV and LNC decays can differ when multiple RH neutrinos are involved in the process.

Complete set of dimension-nine operators in the standard model effective field theory

Hao-Lin Li et al.

Summary: In this study, a complete list of dimension-nine operators in the Standard Model effective field theory was presented using an automatic algorithm based on the amplitude-operator correspondence. The basis of operators was initially constructed based on Young tableau of an auxiliary SU(N) group and gauge groups, with redundancies removed, and further refined to include explicit flavor symmetries and independent monomial operators. This new form of operators provides advantages in eliminating flavor redundancies and identifying independent flavor-specified operators.

Complete set of dimension-eight operators in the standard model effective field theory

Hao-Lin Li et al.

Summary: Utilizing group theoretic techniques, we have systematically and automatically provided a complete list of the dimension-eight operator basis in the standard model effective field theory, adopting a new form of operators based on the irreducible representations of the Lorentz group and identifying Lorentz structures as states in an SU(N) group. By ensuring the independence and permutation symmetries of the operators, our approach facilitates the handling of complexity arising from repeated fields. The explicit form of independent flavor-specified operators has been presented for the first time, and our algorithm can be easily applied to higher-dimensional standard model effective field theory and other effective field theories, making these studies more accessible.

Improved big bang nucleosynthesis constraints on heavy neutral leptons

Summary: The study demonstrates that even a small fraction of mesons present in the primeval plasma can lead to the overproduction of primordial helium-4, limiting the lifetime of thermally produced heavy neutral leptons. Combining this with accelerator searches allows for a new lower bound to be set on HNL masses, defining the bottom line for HNL searches at future Intensity Frontier experiments.

Determining the leading-order contact term in neutrinoless double β decay

Vincenzo Cirigliano et al.

Summary: The method proposed in this study determines the leading-order contact term for nn -> ppe(-)e(-) amplitude through light Majorana neutrino exchange. The approach involves representing the amplitude as a momentum integral of a known kernel and utilizes model-independent representations in low- and high-momentum regions. By matching the obtained amplitude to the LO chiral EFT amplitude, the relevant contact term is determined along with discussions on uncertainties. The validation of the approach through computation of analogous NN contact term showcases the potential for determining contributions in various regularization schemes.

Two-neutrino double beta decay with sterile neutrinos

Patrick D. Bolton et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the effects of a sterile neutrino, coupled to the Standard Model either via a left-handed or right-handed current, on the energy distribution and angular correlation of outgoing electrons in two-neutrino double beta decay. The study focuses on the behavior of the energy distribution at the kinematic end point and estimates the current limits on the active-sterile mixing and effective right-handed coupling, as well as the sensitivities of future experiments. The results complement the corresponding constraints on sterile neutrinos from single beta decay measurements in the 0.1-10 MeV mass range.

Large-Nc analysis of two-nucleon neutrinoless double-β decay and charge-independence-breaking contact terms

Thomas R. Richardson et al.

Summary: The interpretation of experiments searching for neutrinoless double-beta decay relies on nuclear theory input. Cirigliano et al. recently showed that in the light Majorana exchange formalism, effective field theory calculations require a specific contact term, which they estimated based on measured charge-independence-breaking nucleon-nucleon interactions. They found that the assumptions underlying their approximation are justified in the large number of colors limit and obtained a hierarchy among the CIB nucleon-nucleon interactions consistent with phenomenological results.

Searching for lepton number violating Λ baryon decays mediated by a GeV-scale Majorana neutrino with LHCb

Guangshuai Mang et al.

Summary: In this study, lepton-number-violating processes in Lambda(b)/Lambda(c) decays mediated by on-shell GeV-scale sterile neutrinos were examined. By calculating the branching ratio for different processes, sensitivity upper bounds on the mass of sterile neutrino and heavy-light mixing coefficient were determined. Comparing theoretical effective branching ratio with experimental abilities of LHCb, stronger bounds were obtained in the mass range of 2 GeV < m(N) < 4.5 GeV.
