Obesity and effects of dapagliflozin on cardiovascular and renal outcomes in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus in the DECLARE-TIMI 58 trial

Kazuma Oyama et al.

Summary: The study investigated the associations between obesity, cardiorenal events, and the benefits of dapagliflozin in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. The results showed that higher BMI was associated with a higher risk of heart failure and atrial fibrillation. Dapagliflozin reduced body weight consistently across BMI categories, and obese patients tended to derive greater absolute risk reduction in heart failure and atrial fibrillation.

High sodium intake, glomerular hyperfiltration, and protein catabolism in patients with essential hypertension

Giacomo Rossitto et al.

Summary: High sodium intake can lead to changes in renal sodium and water handling, increasing glomerular filtration rate, tubular energy expenditure, and promoting protein breakdown. These findings have significant implications for cardiovascular risk in hypertensive patients.

NO-induced vasodilation correlates directly with BP in smooth muscle-Na/Ca exchanger-1-engineered mice: elevated BP does not attenuate endothelial function

Youhua Wang et al.

Summary: SM-NCX1 in arterial smooth muscle regulates Ca2+ influx and efflux, promoting vasoconstriction or vasodilation. While overexpression of NCX1 does not impair endothelium-dependent vasodilation, knockout of NCX1 markedly attenuates endothelium-dependent vasodilation.

Sodiumintake, life expectancy, and all-cause mortality

Franz H. Messerli et al.

Summary: The study shows a positive correlation between sodium intake and healthy life expectancy at birth and age 60, but not with death due to non-communicable diseases. Conversely, all-cause mortality is inversely correlated with sodium intake worldwide and in high-income countries, suggesting that sodium intake may not be a risk factor for premature death.

Empagliflozin Ameliorates Diastolic Dysfunction and Left Ventricular Fibrosis/Stiffness in Nondiabetic Heart Failure A Multimodality Study

Carlos G. Santos-Gallego et al.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the effect of empagliflozin on diastolic function in non-diabetic heart failure patients and the pathways causing diastolic dysfunction. Empagliflozin was found to improve diastolic function in non-diabetic HF patients, mitigates histological and molecular remodeling, and reduces both left ventricle and cardiomyocyte stiffness.

Salt-Sensitive Hypertension, Renal Injury, and Renal Vasodysfunction Associated With Dahl Salt-Sensitive Rats Are Abolished in Consomic SS.BN1 Rats

Jacqueline C. Potter et al.

Summary: The study found that high salt intake significantly increased blood pressure and exacerbated renal injury in salt-sensitive rats, while salt-resistant rats showed less severe symptoms. In consomic rats, high salt intake significantly decreased renal vascular resistance and increased renal blood flow, whereas these changes did not occur in salt-sensitive rats.

Summary: The study findings suggest that SGLT2 inhibition with canagliflozin may reduce the risk of hyperkalaemia in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and chronic kidney disease treated with renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system inhibitors without increasing the risk of hypokalaemia.

Sodium intake, life expectancy, and all-cause mortality

Franz H. Messerli et al.

Summary: Our study found a positive correlation between sodium intake and life expectancy worldwide and in high-income countries, but no correlation with death due to non-communicable diseases, and an inverse correlation with all-cause mortality. This suggests that dietary sodium intake may not be a culprit in shortening lifespan or a risk factor for premature death.
