Intrinsic layer modification in silicon heterojunctions: Balancing transport and surface passivation

Christoph Luderer et al.

Summary: In this study, the intrinsic hydrogenated amorphous silicon layer in silicon heterojunction solar cells was modified to improve carrier transport while maintaining excellent passivation of the silicon absorber surface. The microstructure of different multilayer intrinsic silicon films was measured and its influence on contact resistance and passivation quality was investigated. The results showed that there is a trade-off between passivation and transport, which is determined by the properties of the amorphous silicon layer close to the silicon surface. Modified intrinsic layers were tested on cell level and showed reduced series resistance and increased fill factor, leading to improved power conversion efficiency. Additionally, the beneficial effect of a hydrogen plasma treatment on passivation and transport of the hole contact was demonstrated at the device level.

Contact Resistivity Measurements and their Applicability for Accurate Series Resistance Breakdown in Heterojunction Solar Cell

Luca Antognini et al.

Summary: In this study, accurate breakdown of series resistance (R-S) in a 2 cm x 2 cm screen-printed solar cell was performed using multiple approaches. Experimental observations differed from theoretical expectations, and the accuracy of different methods in predicting R-S and its trend varied. Practical differences between the methods were discussed and possible improvements were proposed.

Advanced method for electrical characterization of carrier-selective passivating contacts using transfer-length-method measurements under variable illumination

L. -L. Senaud et al.

Summary: Carrier-selective passivating contacts are crucial for practical efficiency limits in c-Si solar cells, but transport losses affecting carrier collection still need to be addressed. A novel concept of "shell" and characterization methodology using TLM measurements was proposed to study charge-carrier transport in SHJ n-type contact stacks. The impact of illumination on contact resistivity was highlighted, underscoring the importance of measuring under maximum power point conditions for accurate characterization of solar cell transport losses.

In depth analysis of transfer length method application on passivated contacts under illumination

Leo Basset et al.

Summary: The influence of light on the contact resistivity of the electron and hole contacts of a silicon heterojunction cell was studied using the transfer length method. Results showed that measurements are more accurate in darkness and at high injection levels. Careful attention to passivation properties is needed when fabricating TLM samples.
