Revealing Fine Structures of the Retinal Receptive Field by Deep-Learning Networks

Neural System Identification With Spike-Triggered Non-Negative Matrix Factorization

Summary: This study extends the application of spike-triggered non-negative matrix factorization (STNMF) method, successfully detecting various computational properties of upstream bipolar cells (BCs) in a model of retinal ganglion cells (GCs), as well as recovering synaptic connection strengths from the weight matrix of STNMF. Results show that STNMF can separate spikes of a GC into subsets contributed by individual presynaptic BCs.
