Sexual antagonism in haplodiploids

Thomas J. Hitchcock et al.

Summary: Haplodiploids exhibit different genetic and ecological dynamics compared to diploids, leading to varying selection pressures for alleles that benefit females and males. The interaction between social ecology and genetic inheritance plays a crucial role in shaping sexual conflict and competition between genders.

Sequence locally, think globally: The Darwin Tree of Life Project

Mark L. Blaxter

Summary: The Earth Biogenome Project aims to sequence the genomes of all eukaryotic life on earth, and the Darwin Tree of Life Project focuses on delivering high-quality genome sequences for the British and Irish islands. The collaboration between biodiversity organizations and genomics institutes has established a workflow that collects specimens, performs sequencing, generates curated assemblies, and openly releases the data for global use in future scientific and conservation efforts.

Gene-rich X chromosomes implicate intragenomic conflict in the evolution of bizarre genetic systems

Noelle Anderson et al.

Summary: Haplodiploidy and paternal genome elimination are common in invertebrates and have evolved from male heterogamety. The importance of X chromosomes in this evolution is debated, with the Haploid Viability Hypothesis suggesting X-linked genes promote male haploidy, and the Intragenomic Conflict Hypothesis proposing conflict between genes as the driving force. By studying lineages with germline PGE and an XX/X0 system, we found increased X linkage in gPGE+X species, supporting the Intragenomic Conflict Hypothesis. These results provide evidence for the role of intragenomic conflict in the evolution of genetic systems like HD/PGE.

Gene-rich germline-restricted chromosomes in black-winged fungus gnats evolved through hybridization

Christina N. Hodson et al.

Summary: Germline-restricted DNA has evolved in various animals, including vertebrates, nematodes, and flies. In this study, the researchers conducted a genomic analysis of germline-restricted chromosomes (GRCs) in the fungus gnat Bradysia coprophila. They found that the GRCs in B. coprophila are large, gene-rich, and have divergent homologous genes compared to other chromosomes in the genome. The researchers also discovered the presence of two divergent GRCs in the sequenced population. Unexpectedly, the GRC genes in B. coprophila are more similar to genes from a different fly family (Cecidomyiidae) than to genes from the same family (Sciaridae), suggesting that these chromosomes likely arose through hybridization with a related lineage. These findings provide a basis for understanding the evolution of GRCs in Sciaridae.

Uniparental Genome Elimination in Australian Carp Gudgeons

Zuzana Majtanova et al.

Summary: This study investigates the cytogenomic mechanisms of somatic and germ cell chromosomes in sexual and hybrid genotypes of Australian carp gudgeons by tracing their fate during mitosis and meiosis. Results provide direct evidence for classic hybridogenesis as a reproductive mode in these fish. Hybrid individuals exhibit two parental sets with integral structure in their soma, contrasting with uniparental chromosomal inheritance in their gonads. The inheritance mode involves premeiotic genome duplication of the parental genome transmitted, with the second parental genome likely gradually eliminated in juvenile individuals. The study also discusses the role of metacentric chromosomes in hybrid evolution.

Males That Silence Their Father's Genes: Genomic Imprinting of a Complete Haploid Genome

Andres G. de la Filia et al.

Summary: Genetic conflict drives evolution of reproductive systems with non-Mendelian inheritance, such as paternal genome elimination (PGE) in insects like mealybugs. This conflict leads to biased gene expression patterns and elevated rates of molecular evolution, providing insights into the origin and mechanisms of PGE.

Chromosome-level genome assembly reveals homologous chromosomes and recombination in asexual rotifer Adineta vaga

Paul Simion et al.

Summary: This study presented the first high-quality chromosome-level genome assemblies for the bdelloid Adineta vaga, revealing potential recombination events during mitosis and modified meiosis, as well as the structural diversity in dynamic subtelomeric regions. These results prompt a reevaluation of meiotic processes in bdelloid rotifers and contribute to understanding the factors underlying their long-term asexual evolutionary success.

Disentangling Verbal Arguments: Intralocus Sexual Conflict in Haplodiploids

Kora Klein et al.

Summary: Haplodiploids exhibit unique patterns of intralocus sexual conflict, with similarities to loci on X (or Z) chromosomes. The co-occurrence of the three features makes it challenging to pinpoint their individual roles, but they do not always occur together in nature.
