Acceleration of climate warming and plant dynamics in Antarctica

Nicoletta Cannone et al.

Summary: The air temperature in the Antarctic Peninsula region has been warming significantly between the 1950s and 2016, exceeding the global average warming. This has had evident impacts on terrestrial ecosystems and the two native Antarctic vascular plants. There was a short but intense cooling period from the Antarctic Peninsula to the South Orkney Islands. However, the strong warming trend is predicted to resume, and it will have continued impacts on the abiotic and biotic components of terrestrial ecosystems.

Abiotic stress responses in plants

Huiming Zhang et al.

Summary: Plants face abiotic stresses like drought, salinity, and extreme temperatures, which greatly impact their distribution, growth, and crop productivity. Recent research has revealed the complex molecular mechanisms involved in plants' responses to these stresses, including sensing, signaling, transcription, translation, and post-translational modifications. This knowledge can be utilized to enhance crop resilience and sustainability through genetic, chemical, and microbial approaches.

The Antarctic Moss Pohlia nutans Genome Provides Insights Into the Evolution of Bryophytes and the Adaptation to Extreme Terrestrial Habitats

Shenghao Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, we assembled the high-quality genome sequence of the Antarctic moss Pohlia nutans and found that it has a larger genome size compared to other bryophytes. The genome of P. nutans contains a high number of gene duplications and expansions of gene families, which may contribute to its adaptation to extreme environments. Genes related to phenylpropanoid biosynthesis, unsaturated fatty acid biosynthesis, and plant hormone signal transduction are expanded in the genome of P. nutans, potentially supporting its lifestyle in Antarctica. Flavonoid biosynthesis may function in detoxification of reactive oxygen species under UV-B radiation, as revealed by integrated multi-omic analyses.

Transcriptomics Integrated With Metabolomics Reveal the Effects of Ultraviolet-B Radiation on Flavonoid Biosynthesis in Antarctic Moss

Shenghao Liu et al.

Summary: Bryophytes are dominant in the Antarctic and have been exposed to more UV radiation due to ozone layer destruction. This study investigated the transcriptional and metabolic changes in Antarctic moss under UV-B radiation, revealing significant up-regulation of genes related to UV-B signaling, flavonoid biosynthesis, and DNA repair, as well as changes in metabolites like flavonoids. The results suggest that molecular mechanisms like UVR8-mediated signaling, jasmonate signaling, and DNA repair contribute to the acclimation of Antarctic moss to UV-B radiation.

Methyl Gallate Improves Hyperuricemia Nephropathy Mice Through Inhibiting NLRP3 Pathway

Peng Liu et al.

Summary: The study found that methyl gallate has significant protective effects on hyperuricemia nephropathy (HN) by inhibiting uric acid production, promoting excretion, ameliorating renal injury, and inhibiting NLRP3 inflammasome activation. Mechanistically, methyl gallate is a direct NLRP3 inhibitor that also blocks the oligomerization of NLRP3 and exerts anti-inflammatory activity in NLRP3-driven diseases. It also showed activity against ATP-treated PBMCs and synovial fluid mononuclear cells from patients with gout.

MdKCS2 increased plant drought resistance by regulating wax biosynthesis

Xin-Yu Lian et al.

Summary: The apple wax-related gene MdKCS2 plays a role in enhancing plant resistance to drought stress by increasing wax accumulation and changing epidermal permeability. Transgenic analysis indicated that MdKCS2 improved resistance to abiotic stress in apple calli. Ectopic expression of MdKCS2 in Arabidopsis increased wax content in leaves and stems, changed cuticle permeability, and enhanced drought resistance.

East Antarctic cooling induced by decadal changes in Madden-Julian oscillation during austral summer

Pang-Chi Hsu et al.

Summary: This study reveals that part of the summer cooling trend in East Antarctica is forced by decadal changes in the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO), which modifies atmospheric circulations leading to a net cooling trend in East Antarctica. The findings emphasize that changes in intraseasonal tropical climate patterns can have significant implications for climate change in Antarctica.
