Apocarotenoids profiling in different Capsicum species

Mariosimone Zoccali et al.

Summary: This study applied a supercritical fluid extraction-supercritical fluid chromatography-triple quadrupole/mass spectrometry methodology to analyze apocarotenoids in seventeen different chilli pepper cultivars, identifying various free apocarotenoids and apocarotenoids fatty acid esters. Additionally, novel epsilon apoluteinals and 4-oxo-apo-beta-carotenals were detected in Capsicum species for the first time.

Bioactive Compounds and Antioxidant Capacity of Valencian Pepper Landraces

Eva Martinez-Ispizua et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the bioactive compounds and antioxidants in 18 sweet pepper landraces at different maturity stages, and found that ripening significantly increased the content of phenols, ascorbic acid, carotenoids, and lycopene in red fruits. Certain landraces, such as P-44 and P-46, exhibited high levels of carotenoids, phenols, and antioxidant capacity. Traditional landraces were noted for their potential in developing new functional pepper varieties due to their wide variability in bioactive compounds concentration.

Summary: Pepper fruits contain a variety of bioactive compounds such as antioxidants, polyphenols, and capsaicinoids, which levels vary with the ripening stage and treatment with nitric oxide. Metabolomic and transcriptomic approaches can help uncover the synthesis regulation of these compounds in pepper fruits.

Lipidomics-Based Comparison of Molecular Compositions of Green, Yellow, and Red Bell Peppers

Aimee K. Sutliff et al.

Summary: Identifying and annotating the molecular composition of individual foods can enhance the understanding of how foods impact human health and the variability in molecular composition of foods. The study revealed 11 compounds that differ by color in bell peppers, with beta-cryptoxanthin being the most strongly associated compound with color.

Fine Mapping and Candidate Gene Identification for the CapUp Locus Controlling Fruit Orientation in Pepper (Capsicum spp.)

Abate Mekonnen Solomon et al.

Summary: The orientation of pepper fruits is controlled by a dominant gene, which was identified and localized on chromosome 12 through QTL analysis and GWAS. The study narrowed down the region of interest based on two markers completely cosegregated with the phenotype, providing insights for understanding pepper fruit development and breeding for fruit orientation.
