OsbZIP60-mediated unfolded protein response regulates grain chalkiness in rice

Weiping Yang et al.

Summary: A genome-wide association study reveals that the transcription factor OsbZIP60 plays a vital role in regulating rice grain chalkiness. Activation of the unfolded protein response pathway and key genes related to chalkiness contribute to the formation of grain chalkiness in rice.

Identification and Pleiotropic Effect Analysis of GSE5 on Rice Chalkiness and Grain Shape

Liangrong Jiang et al.

Summary: In this study, the candidate gene GSE5 was identified and characterized as a major quantitative trait gene for rice chalkiness. The results showed that GSE5 had pleiotropic effects and regulated both chalkiness and grain shape. Genetic analysis revealed that GSE5 played a dominant role in grain length and a semi-dominant role in grain width and chalkiness. The study also revealed the regulatory network of GSE5 on carbon and protein metabolism, providing insights into the mechanisms underlying chalkiness formation in rice.

Fine mapping of qWCR7, a grain chalkiness QTL in rice

Bian Wu et al.

Summary: Chalkiness in rice, a highly undesirable trait for breeding and marketing, is determined by the white-core rate (WCR) which was genetically validated and fine mapped in this study. The synthesis and accumulation of metabolites play a key role in chalkiness formation, with starch and storage protein being closely related to the white-core trait. These findings lay the foundation for map-based cloning of qWCR7, which may have potential value in quality improvement during rice breeding.

Target chromosome-segment substitution: A way to breeding by design in rice

Guiquan Zhang

Summary: Progress in plant breeding relies on genetic resources, genetic knowledge, and breeding techniques. Breeding by design aims to control all allelic variation for genes of agronomic importance by utilizing naturally occurring variation. By applying a three-step strategy, including constructing a SSSL library, identifying desirable genes, and designing new rice lines with target gene pyramiding, successful achievements have been made in rice breeding using the HJX74-SSSL platform.

Guangming Lou et al.

Summary: This study conducted a genome-wide association study on floury endosperm in 533 cultivated rice accessions, identifying a major gene FLO19 that affects rice CEQ and demonstrating the potential for improving rice quality by editing this gene. Additionally, the mutation of FLO19 gene revealed its impact on rice growth and yield through disrupting carbon and nitrogen metabolism.
