Agricultural practices linked to shifts in groundwater microbial structure and denitrifying bacteria

K. L. Korbel et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of different land uses (irrigated and non-irrigated) on groundwater microbial communities. The results show that irrigated land uses significantly affect microbial community structure and diversity within groundwaters, with lower microbial diversity in irrigated sites. Differences in community structure and function were observed between catchments and land uses, with irrigated sites having higher abundances of microbes with nitrifying capabilities. Specific taxonomic groups may be useful indicators of long-term nitrogen contamination in groundwaters.

Interactions Between Marine Group II Archaea and Phytoplankton Revealed by Population Correlations in the Northern Coast of South China Sea

Songze Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the interactions between MGII archaea and phytoplankton in the northern coast of the South China Sea. The results showed distinct community patterns of MGII archaea in different sampling regions and seasons. Network analysis revealed positive correlations between MGII archaea and cyanobacteria, haptophytes, and stramenopiles. These findings contribute to our understanding of the multiple interactions between co-existing species in different oceanic regions.

Interactive Tree Of Life (iTOL) v5: an online tool for phylogenetic tree display and annotation

Ivica Letunic et al.

Summary: The Interactive Tree Of Life is an online tool for displaying, manipulating, and annotating phylogenetic and other trees. The latest version 5 introduces a new tree display engine and several new features, such as a new dataset type and expanded annotation options. Users can now also manually annotate trees by hand, providing more flexibility and control.

The Beach Aquifer Microbiome: Research Gaps and Data Needs

Anand Archana et al.

Summary: Beach aquifers, unique ecosystems with steep chemical and physical gradients, have microorganisms that play vital biogeochemical roles, despite being poorly understood. Current knowledge is primarily informed by 16S ribosomal RNA gene sequences, with potential for further investigation using metagenomics and metatranscriptomics. Understanding microbial roles in elemental cycling and carbon stocks in beach aquifers is critical for global climate models.

Comparative genomic analysis reveals metabolic flexibility of Woesearchaeota

Wen-Cong Huang et al.

Summary: The archaeal phylum Woesearchaeota, belonging to the DPANN superphylum, consists of phylogenetically diverse microorganisms that exhibit a symbiotic lifestyle, with some exceptions in subgroup J. Genomic analyses suggest that these archaea may be anaerobic fermentative heterotrophs, based on the presence of putative [FeFe] hydrogenases in their genomes.

Presence of Fe(II) and nitrate shapes aquifer-originating communities leading to an autotrophic enrichment dominated by an Fe(II)-oxidizing Gallionellaceae sp.

Natalia Jakus et al.

Summary: The presence of Fe(II) promotes the growth of denitrifying Burfeholderiaceae spp. and an unclassified Gallionellaceae sp., with the latter showing the potential to oxidize Fe(II), fix CO2, and perform denitrification. Novel putative NRFeOx taxa, including Curvibacter spp., Methyloversatilis sp., and Thermomonas spp., were also identified.
